In the posts following the stories in the op's links, it's mentioned that Gayle has a number of lawsuits in civil court against her former business. What's that about and is that not a sign of problems?

Maybe I'm reading a bit too much into this, but it really sounds like there's some bitterness there. Definitely seems to support the idea that he views them as acting entitled and leaching off of his success.

I believe I heard someone say in passing that they will hold a press conference of sorts tomorrow (today) regarding the reasons behind this.

From what I can tell, everyone with any sense who knows the Bensons or deals with them on a regular basis has seen this coming for quite awhile. Tom is very dependent upon Gayle. And Gayle has been solid. She really encouraged him to purchase the Pelicans, and she wants there to be a positive, lasting legacy for Tom.

Unfortunately I can't find my post on this subject from several months ago about this situation and the internal turmoil that was going on. Here is what I do know--Tom Benson is not in good health both physically or mentally and hasn't been in good mental shape for quite some time (so keep this mind going forward as this situation further develops--AND IT WILL).
"Purportedly" the trailer trash side of the Benson family (Rita, Renee, and Ryan) tried to hire a physician to see Benson so the physician would declare Tom Benson mentally incapacitated. Tom Benson mentally is not in great shape and he probably be declared mentally incapacitated if the doctor had been able to see him. He is cognizant at times but other times not so much. There was also a lot more going on behind the scenes like Loomis, Peyton, Brees, and other prominent officials of both organizations forcing the issue by giving an ultimatum. Trailer park trash crew were actively trying to force Gayle out of everything and this didn't sit well with a lot of people.
As for Rita her behavior throughout this entire episode can be described as "erratic & irrational" with a Marge Schott/Leona Helmsley superiority complex. Allegations of illegal drug use, poor choice of friends, and that some on the Tom Benson side (note: archdioceses) didn't particularly take to kindly to her "sexual lifestyle".
Here is what I see playing out: I would be very surprised to see Renee, Rita, or Ryan put out any public statements on this right now. I believe they have already lawyered up with some of the best law firms that money can buy in the US on this matter. I anticipate a lawsuit will be filed in state court in Texas after Benson passes away. World War III will take place over Tom Benson's mental capacity and whether he was truly cognizant to make this move. This will be very interesting and sad to see IMO. The Tom Benson family "affairs" will shine a light on a tremendous amount of skeletons which could paint Gayle and Tom in a bad light for some and will absolutely make Renee/Rita look like total buffoons.
I am 100% Pro-Gayle by the way but even I am concerned that Rita/Gayle/Ryan could get their control back over the franchises when they contest this after Benson's death. This shite show is far from over.

elaborate on this, why would pAyton and loomis etc be forcing Gayle out?

Sorry I fixed the sentence structure. Let me clarify so I'm clearler The trailer park trash crew (aka Rita/Renee/Ryan) were trying to force out Gayle not Loomis, et al. There is a "very" strong relationship between Gayle and Peyton, Loomis, Lauscha, Vicki, Ed, Jean-Paul, etc.

Very true but Benson's affair with Gayle while Grace was sick didn't really endear her to the family either. Rita had a good relationship with Grace so the affair still resonates with her personally. Now the archdiocese & Benson PR team fictional story of how Tom/Gayle actually met will be coming to a theater soon with this case.
