Anyone ever been an Adjunct Professor?

I do it now. Not bad for some easy side money.

Heck yes. Best side gig ever. And you can do it as long as you can make it to class. I plan to be an 80 year old cracker teaching 18 year olds Life Span and Development.

Its $2500/3 hour class here. Grade a few papers and you are putting in average of 4 hours a week for a 10 week class.

If you are doing it for a reputable university such as LSU or one of its satellite campuses, it's a pretty decent thing.

If you are doing it for some outfit such as University of Phoenix, be prepared to be treated like shite. They not only tell you what you are going to teach, but they are going to tell you HOW to teach it. If you get an inch off the chalk line, they will harass you to no end. Many of the students are there because they cannot get into a state university (UOP has open admissions). You essentially spoon feed them because UOP wants to hang on to them until they have exhausted their student loan benefits, then they will toss them like a $3 whore. The degrees are meaningless at most places. Their hours will not transfer to a legit college or university. They are regionally accredited, but they got very creative in how they got there, and I really think that they should have their accreditation pulled.

Now back to the state universities, they allow you academic freedom, you have a better class of students since most campuses are selective admissions now, with the exception of the community colleges. You are treated with respect, and it is actually an enjoyable job.

I have taught adjunct with the state universities for years and have always enjoyed it. I taught for UOP for a brief period of time and didn't enjoy that at all - and left.
