It has a lot of obvious influence from Illmatic, Ready To Die, and even the Bridge is Over (KRS One), Dude is a Hip Hop head like a few of us with a lot of respect for the old school for sure.

Amazing album, but sorry, its not better than illmatic.

Joey's the truth and the future of nyc hip hop though.

To me its one the best hip hop albums to come out in a few years, especially as a debut.

Itll be interesting to see if anything in 2015 tops it, i find it hard to believe that anything this year will be better (rj3 maybe?).

I think it is definitely the most consistent of the 2010s. The only one I have enjoyed as much since 2010 would be good kid, m.A.A.d city.

Honorable mentions with Acid Rap, Wu-Massacre, and Distant Relatives imo. I feel like I'm missing one or two but I agree B4.D4SS is up there as one of the best in a long time.

I loved gkmc, but as someone who grew up in nj listening to nyc hip hop in the mid 90s, b4.da.$$ resonates with me much more. Off the top of my head in the last few years i would saw acid rap, both rtjs, doris, r.a.p. Music and gkmc would all be up there.

I was never really much of a fan of Earl Sweatshirt. I'll have to give it a re-listen.

I liked it better than acid rap, its just so out there and i love the beats on it. Its not for everyone though.

Yeah, I don't like most of music from Odd Future, but I loved Sweatshirt's album

I don't remember making this thread, but this is the most refreshing album I've heard in a really long time. Also, isnt A$AP dropping a new album soon? And I'll patiently wait Jay Electronica, this could be a hell of a year

A$AP might be in limbo with timing right now with Yams passing away tragically this week. Pretty much handled the management and was the brains of the Mob and was obviously close to everyone in it. No telling how Rocky and crew react.

I've lost faith in Jay Elec. His talent is undeniable, but I'm tired of him dropping hints only to never follow through.

And this new Nation of Islam shite Jay is real deep in is troubling too. As someone who's been burned for what seems like the better part of a decade, I'm officially giving up on ever hearing a full Jay Electronica EP.

Lol it's funny how this thread took off after the 1st few days of the release I was trying to get Ru's thread to take off and it just never did lol

As I posted in that other thread it's the best album I've heard since maybe Vakill's "Armor of God" and Brother Ali's "Undisputed Truth" and I hold both those albums in very high regard personally.

I love it

The 5% Nation is pretty normal for East Coast rappers. It's wacky as hell, but tons of great artists have been involved with them.

It's actually kind of fascinating. When you read about it, you realize how often the 5% Nation turns up in lyrics.

Here's a scholarly article about it dating way back to 1997 that points out a lot of 5% influence in specific lyrics (one of the "experts" on this is a graduate of the UofA's anthropology department.
