USMNT possibly experimenting with a 3-man backline

I've been hoping they'd try this for quite some time with the personnel that we have on the A-Team. It may fail miserably, but I'm glad they are experimenting.

When it comes to spilling secrets, Jermaine Jones just can't help himself. In October, before the national team's 1-1 tie against Honduras, he dropped a hint about his surprise move to center-back. On Tuesday, Jones was at it again, telling reporters the U.S. has been practicing with a three-man back line of late. Jones said he's been serving as the sweeper in the middle of the defense. (Matt Besler, Matt Hedges and Steve Birnbaum have rotated as the marking backs.) Jones wasn't giving everything away, though. Asked if the U.S. played a 3-5-2 or a 3-4-3, Jones, to laughter, replied, "You'll see."

As bad as our outside back play has been (besides Fab), it's worth a try.

Fab, DMB and Yedlin were solid in Brazil.
More than anything, it was our advanced wing play that was weak. With this, you can move Fab and Yedlin in to a more advanced role without really sacrificing much. Obviously, we won't see that though, considering it's Camp Strudel.

I might be crazy, but I definitely feel like Yedlin and Fab could play wing back. I'd at least like to see them try.
The 3-5-2 sounds sexy as hell.

Great idea. Tactically flexible and allows our best wing players -- our fullbacks -- to help more in attack with cover defensively.

My dream lineup for this cycle

Lots of potential fapping there

Your dream lineup has Jones at CM but no Dempsey?

I value Jones at an advanced age a lot higher than I do Deuce.

I guess you are assuming all this JJ at CB is just temporary thing? As long as he is on form I want him in the lineup. I just think a scorer like Dempsey up top with Jozy wouldn't be a bad thing.

According to the link above, he is playing in front of the backline this camp.

Unless there's more in the actual link, he's definitely been playing as the center CB.

Ah, I read that wrong

Cameron plays DM for Stoke
He goes between RB and DM, but I like him in the midfield more, so I agree with your post.

He also holds the record for most curving with the outside of the foot crosses and passes in EPL history.
I just made that up, but he does it all the damn time. It's almost become comical.

True, but he is really good at it.

Haha, yah he is actually very good at it. I mean it makes sense, he's just putting in-swingers into the box.
