ive owned samsung and iphones..

most people use their phones for pics, music, texts, light web surfing and talk.. iOS delivers the best end user experience for nearly all of these categories.. most people do not GAF about all of the nonsensical customization available with android.. they just want an easy to use device..

You lose all of that tinkering and customization freedom with iPhone. But the transition is easy, if you're drawn to the aesthetics and tired of tinkering. I come from 7 years of iPhones, and my reasons for sticking with iPhone for so long all had to do with how "unpolished" and "hacky" android appeared from the ignorant outsider's point of view, compared to iOS. I wasn't a mobile tech guy. Just wanted a phone with internet and a camera, familiar and simple so I can focus my time and energy on other interests. Then I ventured into jailbreaking a few years ago and got a glimpse of the "tinkering" possibilities, but obviously even a jailbroken iPhone is highly limited, hence my desire to finally take the plunge and try Android.

I feel like I got in at the right time with the right phone to see the good and bad of a brand new build of stock Android and a "representation" of Google's vision of flagship hardware; I'm witnessing the initial bugs, app incompatibilities and fragmentation, and the iterative changes through official updates and the very active, helpful, and ridiculously intelligent community working to fix, improve, and innovate what's already there.

I can't speak for other phones with their own manufacturer-exclusive software add-ons/launchers/skins/etc., but I've spent a couple of months with the Nexus 6, while doing fairly substantive comparisons between it and my wife's iPhone 6. Truth be told, straight out of the box, the iPhone 6 beats the Nexus 6. And maybe this is just me being used to the way iOS does things and having to get used to Android as a brand new user, but I feel where Apple wins is with a universally (or at least widely) acceptable and appealing design and interface. Given that smartphones have a much wider appeal beyond the "techie" crowd, it makes sense to keep things intuitive, functional, and most important of all, consistent.

On the other hand, Android's freedom gives users the ability to make things immensely better than just "intuitive and functional." It also gives us the ability to royally frick things up through ignorance. Maybe this is not the most precise analogy, but I liken the iPhone and iOS experience to being presented as a finished, varnished, and framed painting, and stock Android is a prepped canvas with your choice of artists, including yourself.

Undeniably, even with the immense customization available to tailor the environment, Lollipop still has problems at this point, and so does the Nexus 6 itself. It's definitely not perfect, but I understand now why this particular subset of Android users are so willing to look past the minor issues and see the bigger picture. I really don't think I'd ever go back.

TL;DR -- The openness and tinkerer-friendly nature of Android is both a reason to love it and a reason to hate it, and your feeling towards that will probably dictate whether you'll love, tolerate, or hate an iPhone.

"Nonsensical" customization? What sort of customization are you talking about? Something like putting shortcuts to apps wherever you want? Nothing nonsensical about that. Widgets? There are tons of extremely useful widgets, and there's definitely nothing nonsensical about them. Being able to change your launcher? Most people refer to these things as "features", not "nonsensical customization". You really don't have a clue what you're talking about, do you?

And since you said you've owned Samsung phones, you probably haven't even used Lollipop, have you?

And who cares what you think "most people" use their phones for? Did you even read what OP posted? He said he enjoys tinkering.

Your input is absolutely worthless, but you thought you would check in and take a stupid cheap shot at Android users, anyway? Star Wars figurines? Give me a fricking break.

Are you only gonna go after that guy or are you going to criticize this poster also? Because this is a cheap shot too:

I work in IT and I have an Apple household because when I am off the clock I generally feel like using technology and not fixing technology.

This board is obviously heavily tech guys. Most Tech guys are going to want to tinker and customize and do as much with their phones as they possibly can. So the responses here will be heavily weighted in that direction.

I don't think the average user cares to spend the time. They just want to pick their phone up and use it.

See, everything comes down to personal preference.

I'm as tech savvy as most IT guys and love to tinker and tweak as much as anyone. But at the end of the day, the customization and tinkering (i.e. changing a launcher/shortcuts) don't provide enough exponential benefit for me to switch from IOS (fyi, IOS has widgets too as of IOS8). I can customize IOS to enough extent where it is personalized to me. And the specialized CPU and GPU that is being offered through the Iphone 6 and 6+ keep it competitive with the top end android phones.

So, until android releases a fully polished product that offers me something groundbreaking that Apple can't compete with/replicate/improve on, I see no tangible benefit from switching.

At the end of the day, it's different strokes for different folks. Why the hell does someone care what phone someone else uses, other than suffering from cognitive dissonance.

I'm more of the latter, so I have an iPhone 6+.

Have you considered the LG G3? You can remove the back panel and put a customized one on to make it look pretty nice. And you'd get your customization as well.

I think if you're heavily invested in one ecosystem or the other, switching to the other will probably annoy you.
