Any of you gone to Portland for vacation? Wife's 40th is coming up at end of April and was thinking of going here. She loves waterfalls, and I understand there are some amazing ones there. Also would be interested in hitting up the wineries in the area. Will only be a 4-5 day trip from Houston. Might possibly have another couple with us.

Portland is really cool. Prepare for 5 pages of people bellyaching about hipsters and liberals though.

Take time and do Silver Falls State park which is about 1.5 hr south of portland. Great walk and tons of falls. The falls along the Gorge are also great of course.

We went to a couple of the wineries and took a drive out to the coast to Cannon Beach. Also took a drive east to whitewater raft on the Deschutes, but my guess is that April is a bit too early for that. The city itself is very cool. We like the rose garden a lot. Tons of great restaurants and local beer too.

I spent two weeks in Portland and loved it. They have a really good steak house, Ring Side, that we really enjoyed. We put 3K miles on our rental car driving around looking at the sights. We spent a day in Seaside Or also. Great drive to see the Pacific and drive down 101. Lewis and Clark ended their expedition in Seaside.
Portland has a decent night life also. We found some good bars and dance clubs downtown.
The drives around Portland are awesome. We spent a lot of times around the Columbia River and Mount Hood.

That would be a whirlwind tour. So much to do and see in the area particularly if you are into nature.

Don't get any strange there. They have developed their own unique STD's they have cross pollenated so much. Wifey would find out for sure.

Yeah, I know it will be tough for just a few days, but will probably try it. If nothing else to go someplace different. This same group went to Napa/Sonoma when my wife was pregnant a couple years ago(she still wanted to go). This time the other girl is pregnant...so we will have a designated driver
Was really looking at this area too, because I'm into photography and would love to take some shots of the falls.

portland is incredible place to eat and drink. cheapest gourmet eats outside of new orleans. great hotels. my favorite spot is tasty & sons
wouldn't count on the outside until july/august though. it rains almost all the time. drizzly overcast mists all the time.

Try posting this on the Food Board in the FBD later today if you want some more info. There are a couple of guys (Jax-Tiger and LSUintheNW) that live in the area that are good resources buy may not see the post here on the OT.

Portland is a great place, but food wise it isn't that great while Mississippi has some great places to eat all over the state, but especially on the coast.

Watch Portlandia on IFC. It pretty much sums up Portland.

bring an umbrella, dark sunglasses, visine, and always have spare apples or water bottles hanging around
