Unless we're dumb, we would finish the season with an interim. This next hire is extremely important -- which is why I think you have to shitcan him now.

The real question is will Dell be able to hire a coach or is he attached at the hip to Monty, which I think is unfair, even if I'm not sure if I like the guy.

The likeliest scenario:

- Dell is fired

-Joe Dumars is hired and he fires Monty. The board rejoices.

- Dumars states that we will take our time in the search for a next coach, because we have to get this one right.

- We begin to get leaks of all the available coaches that are interested in the job.

-- John Calipari: good relationship with AD, proven winner in college.

-- Shaka Smart: a young innovative college coach who has been long courted.

-- Fred Hoiberg: young college coach, runs an NBA offense, real bright mind.

-- George Karl: proven NBA coach

- Dumars, perhaps with pressure from the Benson family, hires Avery Johnson.

- Pelicans Talk begins to meltdown as we realize that we're about to give Josh Smith a max deal.

- Avery Johnson preemptively hates Jrue Holiday.

- I decide to buy season tickets so I drive to New Orleans to speak with a season ticket rep and begin to ask for prices. I start with a quarter ticket package, my rep responds with "oh about tree fiddy." And that's when I realize that the season ticket rep is about 10 stories tall and a crustacean from the Paleozoic era. That damned loch ness monstah had gotten me again so I yell out "damn you monstah I aint givin you no damn tree fiddy!!" as she swam away.

- I never get season tickets. Avery Johnson hits Jrue Holiday and Anthony Davis demands a trade where he goes on to win 8 NBA titles.

Is this definitely who they would hire to replace Demps?

No, there is always a chance, no matter how small, that they hire someone else.

This is real question #1. Driveman came by the other day and was complaining about both Demps and Monty. I don't think he was dropping inside info, but we have reason to believe he's a legit insider and therefore that his opinion is colored by inside info. We also have heard from Zach Lowe that the team liked Monty better than Demps. Many reasons to believe Demps won't survive this either.

So if they are attached at the hip, question #2 is will Joe Dumars actually conduct a legit coaching search.

I don't see Hoiberg leaving Iowa State being their favorite son and all, but if we could get him away, I'd take him in a heartbeat. Dude is brilliant and seems very Carlislian in his coaching.

It is still early in the day, but if we haven't heard anything by ~5pm then nothing is happening.

Nice south park reference.

Dumars is probable.

Avery 50-50

Karl would be ideal

I don't think he'll leave for another college job but Stevens left Butler, I could see him leave for the NBA.

Why are all of the coaching options college coaches or George Karl? There are a lot of good NBA assistant coaches who would love to be a head coach.

The coach options were just filler before I got to what would really, actually happen.

1) We don't know them as evidenced by that thread on that Rockets assistant you don't want us to steal.
2) I'm not saying it has to be a name, but whoever we hire needs to immediately command respect, both from the team and the fans. I'm not sure this team can handle a situation like the Hawks with Budenholzer. He's worked out fantastically from the current perspective, but it took a year and a half for that to happen. Before they started tearing up the league this year, many people were wondering if Atlanta would blow it all up to escape NBA purgatory. This team needs someone to both be the right guy long term and have an immediate impact.

I agree 100%. We all feel pretty sure that we'd wind up with Avery if we don't go the interim hire route, and that would be a D+ hire. I'd honestly rather stay with Monty for the rest of the year than replace him now with Avery.
