Well if you don't apply for a patent soon with all your glorious pictures on the Internet someone else surely will and be rich. Google "poor mans patent". That's a start.

You should really consider patenting your idea and seeing if it's possible to mass produce the table at low cost. You could make some good $ off of this.
I did a quick search of patent database and surprisingly didn't see any patents specifically for automatic ball washers. I've seen variations of this same idea, although not executed nearly as well, so pretty surprising that someone hasn't ran with the idea. Utility patents are good for 20 years, so if he did apply and get it, he'd be onto something.
To the OP, look into the patent situation more. Even though you're broke, maybe someone close to you can loan you the money to file for the patent. Perfect your prototype, then bring it to a bigger company to license it. You can stay in school and collect a check in perpetuity

I get that you are in college and something like applying for a patent may seem overwhelming, but just take it 1 step at a time. Use google or feel free to ask around on the Money Talks board or OT Lounge if you need help. I'm sure some people would help you out.

You should go on shark tank after you get a patent. This has license deal written all over it.

Thanks for letting me know! That's awesome!
I don't see why I would patent this thing though. Neither do I have any interest in making more tables, nor am I a US citizen. It's a cool idea though!
This table has gone WAY more viral than I ever expected. I wouldn't even have considered patenting anything 3 days ago.

You patent it so no one else can make it for 20 years. You perfect the prototype in your free time, then you shop it around to some bigger companies. If they like it, you can work out a licensing deal with them to where they do all the manufacturing and selling, and all you do is collect a check since it's your idea. Get a family member or friend to apply for the patent.
Mind sharing what it cost you to make that?

Like others have said, you don't have to actually make the tables yourself. You are just patenting the design of the ballwasher and how it works with the table. Like others have said, you could patent it and just bring your design to a company interested in making it. There are company's who make beer pong tables that may be interested, especially since your idea has gone viral. I could see them offering a more expensive "top of the line" type of table with your ball washer included. Here are a couple of those companies:
Pong Original
Party Pong Tables
You also don't have to be a U.S. citizen to file a patent.

Bill of materials:
Arduino $10
Motor shield $20
Fans $20
TCRT 5000 - $1
Water pump (2)- $14
ABS pipe and fittings(enough for 2) - $20
Velcro (enough for 2)- $10
Vinyl tubing (also enough for 2) - $10
So probably a total of about 105 bucks for 2 of them using retail materials. Could've halved the costs if I would've used eBay for everything.

That's actually not a bad idea. I'll have to look into it.

Thats a great table...I built one myself. Curious what everyone thinks of it. I also included a link to a video on youtube that shows more detail...

That's a great table. You should patent your design before the other guy does!
