I haven't actually ever seen Saving Private Ryan, but have seen Shakespeare in Love on TV. Not that it is a particularly favorite of mine anyways.

I just find the complete tone deafness of the Academy I bit bizarre. They were willing to give an Oscar to 36 Mafia for "It's Hard out Here for a Pimp", but couldn't see what a brilliant film it further enhanced.

What a pity. Shakespeare in Love isn't your typical Oscar bait film. It's funny and has plenty of replay value. While I liked Saving Private Ryan more, I do find it to be more pretentious than Shakespeare in Love.

Shakespeare in Love is very entertaining. You're missing out if you have never seen it.

(Immortal Beloved was better with a similar theme, IMHO - but, then again, Oldman is the bomb).

SIL is a classic example of Oscar-bait, though. It's a fine movie for what it is - it just seems overboard on the critical acclaim side. Really? All those awards, but nothing for Rush or Wilkinson? Dench was outstanding - maybe her best performance, but I thought Joe Fiennes held his own against Paltrow and he wasn't even nominated for major awards (I look now and he was at least nominated for a SAG).

It's easy for a period piece to rack up a bunch of costume/set design awards and that's great and all - I just didn't think of it as a "best of the decade" or even best of that year.

I'm going to to disagree here. My support, at least of SiL is well known, but I think Shakespeare in Love falls into another category, something that's more about honoring classic film. That's a completely different type of film and more uneven than Oscar bait. See SiL, The Artist, Gladiator, etc. Those have far more in common with trying to copy, and yes honor older film. Sometimes imitation.

Historical movies are the other major winners. Every now and again we get a big budget winner too, Titanic, Lord of the Rings, etc.

Maybe so, and I wasn't trying to beat it up. But, it does feel like it is consciously pushing all the "Oscar" buttons.

Meh, but I see what you're saying.

Heck, I thought Interstellar got beat up for being a heavy homage to 2001 - and it is better than all these films discussed.

Bob Weinstein from Miramax threw his political clout all over Hollywood to get that Oscar for SiL. Sometimes you just have to kiss the right asses to get what you want. Maybe Spielberg didn't campaign hard enough for Saving Private Ryan. I did enjoy SiL so I don't have a huge problem with it winning.
