There has to be a better pre-pay MIFI plan than Verizon's

Have a 14 year computer junkie with a gaming laptop. Thought I would make the frequent 5 hour trip to Houston more enjoyable for him by getting a used Verizon Jetpack off of the interwebs and activating it with a pre-paid data plan.
Didn’t want a contract or monthly commitment since I only plan on using it for trips – just want to pay for the data I use; buy some data and when it runs out, buy some more. Don’t want to convert my iPhone to a hot spot because that involves changing my contract.
Just got back from Verizon store, activating the jet pack, and the best thing the salesman could offer me was $60 for 3 GB that expire in 30 days. WTF?
There has to be something more cost effective, right?

Just ordered one but it won't be here until April.
I will be able to get 5gb of data that won't expire for $10 less than I just paid Verizon for 3gb.

No problem. I have contemplated abandoning cellular all together but I can't pull the trigger.
