At the very high recommendations of this board and the amazon reviews, I recently started this trilogy. I am halfway through the first book. The story seems pretty simple (so far) and the writing is good and goes quickly.

I am just curious at what point does it really "burn" (pun intended) and become the series all the reviews claim it to be. as of right now, its good but pretty forgettable. Just wondering when to expect things to get really interesting.

Keep going. I just finished the first book and it was awesome. It is about to pick up speed and not slow down.

cool. its entertaining and an easy read so I was going to see where it goes. i figured with big world fantasy books like this it does take time to set things up. just ready to get more into the meat of the story.

Honestly, that's what the series is. It is extremely overrated by this board, and I generally like Sanderson a good bit.

That being said, towards the end of the first book it does fly by.

I read the first several years ago and wasn't interested enough to continue. The plot twist would have been more surprising if it wasn't revealed on the back cover of the paperback. That was an interesting choice.

Think of it in terms of a single book with three parts.

Each book builds to a bigger and bigger climax.

Each book has ebbs and flows, but even the slower parts are building you towards a huge finish

Thread Hijack:

On the Sanderson note, I just started the Way of Kings. Am I supposed to feeel lost in the first few chapters. He's throwing TONS of stuff out there and I feel like I just riding along right now and not really understanding all the little things.

I was considering starting this when I finish the Lightbringer series.

This is concerning....

Stormlight archives has been my favorite work of his.

I would say yes, you probably should feel a little 'lost". Most of the things he's throwing at you actually won't "resolve' until the end of book 2. He rides the kaladin/shallon/jasnah storylines for most of the first book, but keeps giving small pieces of other plots.

Book 1 & 2 really feel like act 1 of the series. By the end of 2, you'll have a clear idea of where all these plots are going, and a really good look at all the important characters.

Eta: the " action" starts at about 65% into the first book. All setup to that point.

I wouldn't say lost, but he hits you with a ton of information up front and then explains as the book progresses. I enjoyed the second book much better than the first.

Yeah I've heard this from multiple sources.

Good to know. I feel I'm fine on the plot, although it's slowly developing, it's the wordbuilding piece that seems a little much right now. From the Prologue to the spren the pre-chapter quotes, etc. Every time I open it up I feel like I have to go back and review.

Woah, that's a long time.

And this isn't to say I don't enjoy it, but I hope I'm supposed to feel overwhelmed right now, that's all.

Without question yes.

That series is his best work, by far.

Don't worry about the Pre-Chapter quotes and things like that right now. They won't make sense, until later at best.

It will all come together a bit. There is quite a substantial amount of world-building here.

Mostly I just stopped worrying about all the minutae I didn't understand got into the characters I cared about. Like Kaladin.

I still don't understand what the point of a lot of the Intermission Chapters are beyond world building, but some of them do clearly come together.

The Spren are the only thing I would tell you to actually pay attention to. The rest will easily come together for you.

It's a long ride to the **spoiler** in a prison cart. Plus, like you said, every other chapter is worldbuilding at this point.

It's a really good series. I like were it ended up.
There is another fourth book set in the future from the world of the trilogy.

I felt that series took off with the climax of book 1. Keep going.
