I think we will see/hear about good compition with Dodd, Clapp, Domond, Austin, Brumfeild, Boute, and Malone through the spring.
Plus we have a few good ones coming in the fall. Should be a pretty strong line next year with the 3 starters back.

Out of the 7 I listed above, most of them were high school AA's right?

Never heard anything about Boutte underwhelming. Everything I've heard and read has been the exact opposite actually. Its all been positive.

And Malone appeared in just 5 games last year and is working at LT.

Dodd appeared in 4. And Austin appeared in 5.

Boutte appeared in 8 games his freshman year and played in all 13 games this past season. And only like 30 players appeared in all 13 games. Boutte was 1 of them. And was the only non starter OL to do that as well.

I'm like the others in here about Boutte. He was the first one I thought of before I clicked the thread. Things would be different if Evan Washington did apply/receive another year, but I'm not certain that will happen.

It's also apparent the LT and LG spots are locked up. That'll leave three open positions with Pocic for sure getting one of those, essentially leaving only two open spots.

Either way, this OL gives us major athletism throughout. It leaves me very optimistic even with the huge loss of La'el. You gotta think this helps the development of the QB even more so. The competition in the spring and summer should only help bring out the best in these guys.

RG: Brumfield: was one of the top OGs coming out of HS
RT: Pocic: has the build of an OT vice OG

LF, run left young man! Should be an abv avg OL as a group

Boutte

I agree about Boutte. He is a Powerful Dude. I think he has the potential to be one of the best run blockers in the league. There are a lot talented offensive linemen on the roster, so there are a number of different good combinations for the starting 5, especially if Gordon moves over from TE. I'm not saying he will, but he could.

I'm as big a fan of Brumfield as anyone is and think when his time comes, he will be a hell of a player. But he was 1 of only a few freshman to not get in any game at all. Yes we were deep at OL this past season, but other young guys got in for a few snaps.

I have a hard time believing he will go from not playing at all to starting for us in just 1 off season. And he would be jumping guys that have more experience than him and have looked solid out there as well.

And yes he was 1 of the top OGs coming out of high school... But so were most of the other guys competing for that spot. And most of them played this past season.

IMO, the OL will look like this:
LT - Hawkins
LG - Vadal
C - Dodd
RG - Boutte
RT - Pocic

And the top backups will be Malone, Clapp, and Brumfield.

I have been hearing nothing but really good things about Malone though. And sounds like the staff has been really high on him. He improved his body and strength and has just flat out gotten better. Here's what Les had to say about him in the middle of the season:
quote:

"K.J. continues to improve, a very athletic guy and physical," explained Miles. "We have him working at some left tackle, but he’s going to be one of those guys that gets better and better. He’s a redshirt freshman, so he’s young, but we would not hesitate to play him in games. He’s really earned the right.”

LINK

That's some high praise right there. If Malone keeps on improving and earns the staffs trust, our best 5 could be:
LT - Hawkins
LG - Vadal
C - Pocic
OG - Boutte
RT - Malone

Edit: Yea Reds right... Domond is most def in the mix.

All (both) of our freshmen on the OL redshirted this year?

I honestly cant remember the last season in which we didnt redshirt members of the OL

Yea both Brum and Clapp redshirted.

And we are loaded at OL right now. Pretty much 2 deep everywhere.

The competition will fun to read about. That's for sure. I don't think we've been this deep at OL in a while.

LT: Hawkins
LG: Vadal
C: Dodd/Clapp
RG: Boutte/Brumfield
RT: Pocic/Domond/Malone

Yeah we have a little depth, but ideally we'd like to have at least 15 linemen

Not necessarily all able to contribute at the present time...but having some youngins progress and contribute in the future

We're getting there

Im excited for spring ball and the different looks we see on the line

I think you will have 15. Pocic, Jonah Austin, Brumfield, Boutte, Dodd, Malone, Clapp, Domond, Alexander, Hawkins, George Brown, Adrian Magee, Hanner Shipley, Maea Teuhema, and one more signee...that I think we'll get.
