VPN and Routers flashed with DD-WRT - updated with solution

I will be subscribibg to a VPN service, but would rather have one via the router to support all devices, over one that you enable device by device. I understand I need to use a router that is flashed with DD-WRT or Tomato.
However, I am smart enough to know what I don't know... and I don't know exactly how to do this.
Is this something I can do relatively easily, or should I try to purchase a router pre-flashed? If I do the latter, will I have to update it on some frequency?
I'll hang up and listen.
UPDATE----------------
I bought a pre-flashed router for DD-WRT on amazon in germany. Surprisingly, it was mailed from NY. This is what I bought.
I then got a VPN account with Private Internet Access and followed these instructions to set up the VPN through the router.
Of course, it wasn't working. I went back and forth many times with their tech support, but they called it a router problem which was out of their scope. After about 2 weeks of this, I decided to restart the router. That made it work. So, tech service rule #1 took me 2 weeks.
There is a command script that will run when you restart the router.
So, now I can use my roku for PBS (my wife loves downton abbey and the kids love Peg + Cat) - so I am now husband / father of the year!

DD-WRT firmware upload is decently straight forward but then again I'm a network engineer... You need to make sure your router is compatible. You can check here LINK
Here are some install instructions LINK
Be aware that this will void all warranties and will run a risk of bricking the router making it a paper weight.
You will not find a new router with DD-WRT installed. Last I checked they didn't exist and a quick google search didn't pull up anything. It will have to be used with someone already loading the firmware.
I flashed an old Linksys 54G box and never updated in 3 years. Really optional for the most part. Usually minor security fixes or new features which you probably won't need.

i found an old linksys router at work and asked IT about it, and they gave it to me!
flashed dd-wrt on it using the guide on StrongVPN and never looked back. netflix, hulu, pandora, watchespn, hbo go, and all that going strong now.

so you think that is better having it on the router? I only have 2 computers that are running on my network and i have PIA installed on both.
I feel i dont need a router with it installed.

Normally I would agree. But if you want to use devices that you can't enter PIA account information on, then you have to go through the router.
I did this for 2 reasons:
To use my Roku in Europe (PBS, etc doesn't work outside the us).
To have a consistent VPN on demand. I have 3 wireless networks in my house and having the VPN on one router allows me to easily choose when I do and don't connect through VPN.
