Get a shotgun with some buckshot. Hard to miss and won't go through walls and hit kids in other rooms.

Shotgun is best for a room. Pistol is for personal protection.
I have mine loaded with 3" 00 buckshot. Some say #2 buck is best.

Overall, a small revolver is best for MOST people.
Pro
-No external safety
-Pull the trigger goes bang
-Good ones available at reasonable prices
-38 special has good stopping power with modern defense ammo
-Good in close quarters (very common to be close in true home defense scenarios)
