He is the Chief of Police. Did you think he was going to put himself on unpaid leave?
That being said, this is a pretty sad situation. He shot her on accident while taking his gun out of the holster and getting ready for bed on New Year's Day at 4am. Probably was drunk. Dumbass.

pretty hard to believe you accidentally shoot someone at 4 AM, unless that's when he is normally up and getting ready for his shift.

Maybe he didn't want to leave it in his vehicle? Maybe he had left it on the night stand and was going to put it away?

This sounds about right. Wife told the reporter that she believed it was an accident.
If he meant to kill her, I'm sure she'd be dead.

What he was doing up and fooling with a gun at 4 a.m. has a lot to do with whether I believe that this was an accident. If he was up and going into work, then okay. If he was just getting home from some New Years Eve event, even if it was accidental he should not have been fooling with a firearm anyway.

True, but I'd like to give a veteran cop the benefit of the doubt when it comes to ending someone who is laying perfectly still a couple feet away.

I originally thought it was trashy to even make this a news story because it sounded tragic but the police chief accidentally shot his wife TWICE.
