Truth about Clemson defense that Steele took over

Clemson's defensive rankings under Vic Koenning from 2005 to 2008, which are the years before Steele took over:
2005 - #11 Scoring Defense, #20 Total Defense
2006 - #16 Scoring Defense, #13 Total Defense
2007 - #10 Scoring Defense, #9 Total Defense
2008 - #13 Scoring Defense, #18 Total Defense
Once Steele takes over, Clemson's national rankings are:
2009 - #25 Scoring Defense, #20 Total Defense
2010 - #13 Scoring Defense, #19 Total Defense
2011 - #81 Scoring Defense, #71 Total Defense
What you get from this is that Clemson's worst scoring defense prior to Steele taking over was #16 nationally, while his only top 20 defense was #13 there.
In total defense, his defenses were slightly worse than the previous years, but followed by a horrific dropoff.
While I have little faith that he will do better then a slightly weaker defense than under Chavis, it is likely two years down the line that we will realize the overall results of this hire.
I am not optimistic, but there are just too many variables at play hear to really know if this is a bad, mediocre, good or great hire by LSU.
Here's to hoping it turns out to be a great hire.

He had nothing even resembling what our recruiting classes are. Nor had he learned a second under Saban at that point.

Wasn't he Saban's DC for 07

Post the stats for the defense.

Uummmm...he was with Saban in 07&08
Those numbers are a little concerning. He was actually the defensive coordinator in 07 and associate head coach in 08 under Saban.
There is just to many variables though to make a sound judgment call.
Saban liked him enough to bring him back though.

You summed up my sentiments exactly. I'm really hoping he will be successful and we can start locking up (more) elite athletes.

As a position coach.
I agree that there are too many variables, but this is truly a mediocre hire given his history. He's been a DC for 4 years. In that time, he's one defense in the top 19 and 2 30th or above.
I don't think he's as horrible as many choose to believe, but he's not a coach that as a coordinator instills confidence in his playcalling and scheming abilities.

We do not care about Clemson!!

This...
is why "we" melted last night.
Pendergast/O or Shoop/O would've been much better, but hopefully the recruiting aspect will overcome.
Or Steele will do a decent job.
There is at least hope..
If the defense reverts to the "two headed monster" year, then the melt was warranted.

Posi Tiger here....
They lost some good defensive players to the draft the year prior to the downfall so there's that.

Individually, our defense has a great D-Line coach in Coach O, a great LB coach in Steele and an awesome secondary coach in Raymond. Our biggest concern will be Steele's in game play calling. Thankfully, Steele as an SEC West defensive coach will be very familiar with the offensive schemes and personnel he will be calling against.

This what I think Miles was thinking in hiring Steele as DC instead of some of the other names on the list. That and the fact that both Steele and Orgeron are high-energy type coaches, a factor that has been missing on the coaching staff prior.
These new hires were meant to reinvigorate the energy level of the LSU program.
That's my perspective on it.

Best info I have found about Steele as a recruiter, coach, and scheme-wise at Clemson. LINK

Plus Shoop and Pendergast are primarly DB coaches. We needed a good all around coach that was also a LB coach. I also think the trip to Dallas was to interview Matt Eberflus, LB coach for the Cowboys and former DC at Mizzou.
The LSU plane headed to the Carolinas had to be Steele since he's from around there.

This confirms a lot of my suspicions about what went wrong in Clemson. Hopefully he learned his lesson, because that will not work any better here than it did at Clemson.

Looking at those stats the only reason Les hired this guy is his Alabama resume & being a damn good recruiter . It's hard to believe that out of 32 NFL teams & over 100 college football schools that not one legit Defensive coordinator would be a better fit than Coach Steele. There has to be a reason why someone more qualified did not want the job or miles refused to hire someone more qualified, just doesn't make since.

Based on Miles comments yesterday he was ready to hire Steele away from Clemson over Chavis had the buyout at Clemson not been in place.
Steele said all the right things and I think new voices will be welcome on the defensive side of the ball. I also think the offense will improve enough for LSU to do more things there as well.

it doesn't matter how bad he is cause we now have coach o and coach o makes anything better.
