People complain about Yelp to the BBB
Posted by stout on 1/14/15 at 6:21 pm60
That's like a 12 year old boy seeking protection from a pedo by going to a Priest.

What's funny is the BBB was the first to come up with this scheme but they are just way more subtle about it. They operate the same way though. Pay them money and you get zero bad reviews or they disappear. If you don't though they will blast that bad review and harass you about it. Non-profit or not they still have a vested interest in keeping money coming in so they have a job.
I have said on here many times that the BBB is just like the Mafia when it comes to extortion. Yelp is the same way no doubt but how naive are people not to see this about the BBB too?
It still amazes me how many people think the BBB has any power and is more than just a private organization. Guess the Bureau part of their name confuses people

Mafia-like extortion?
Over the past few years, the Better Business Bureau has dealt with numerous complaints about Yelp involving allegations about manipulated reviews that Yelp offers to fix if the business pays to advertise.
One recent complainant went as far as to claim that "Yelp is trying to extort money from me … they are no different than the Mafia.” According to the Better Business Bureau, this issue has been resolved.

The BBB is a racket. Good post.

Add Angie's List to it too.
I feel sorry for people that hire contractors off of AL. They aren't getting the best contractor. They are simply getting the ones willing to pay the outrageous fees to AL to get recommended for jobs.

They are and a lot of folks do not realize this. I used to be a member of the BBB when I first started out then realized it was a waste. I just SMH at my pro peers who still believe in a BBB membership. frick BBB, AL, and the like, nothing but a sham.

A lots of vendors look at it. Not so much banks
The only vendors I deal with just looked at my personal info since I own the business even though it is incorporated.
I have only once used my D&B for some equipment I bought.
I no longer pay the BBB their $600 a year. It's not worth it. Few people under 60 check BBB anyway, and the only people who get upset I am not on the BBB are older people.
I do not like having to pay 2x what I pay for a Yellow Page ad, just for the right to put "BBB" on my advertisements.

also, Yelp took away three five star reviews when I stopped advertising. But my rating is still five stars. Just with less reviews.
It's silly, but they rarely count ads from new customers. I think unless you have 10 reviews they won't use your review in tallying.

AL is different. It's free for business, but the consumer has to pay. If AL is a scam, I haven't spotted it yet.
I don't pay them a cent and get like 5 referrals a month from there. Housewives love it.

They must have changed because at one point they used to ask for a percentage of the cost of the jobs they sent you. Of course this was years ago when they contacted me about signing up.
There are some new sites popping up that do this like Porch.com

Does anyone pay attention to the BBB or Yelp?

Yelp is widely relied upon among people I know.

If I actually pay attention to Yelp reviews, it's to read the negative reviews and decide whether or not they're valid. Sometimes I'll see reviews that make no sense, such as one girl bitching about a cigar bar in San Francisco because there were people smoking cigars in the bar. Or I'll read about the bar that's racist against black people, although the bar happens to have a black manager.

Yeah .. The BBB's a huge fricking joke ... There's so much hypocrisy in the BBB being "notified" about Yelp's practices, it's not even funny ..
Would you say it's more hypocrisy or ignorance?

I understand it doesn't have any real power and that it's just a private interprise. However, on two occasions, I've sent them complaints as a consumer. I tried to come to terms with the company beforehand on both occasions and couldn't come to a common ground. Contacted BBB and they changed their tune immediately.

This was my experience, too. The company did a complete about face and were suddenly very reasonable with me after getting the BBB complaint.
As a consumer, to have some sense that the business you are dealing with is concerned enough about their reputation to announce they are holding themselves to a standard, the BBB standard, no matter how nebulous, is worth something.
I don't put as much credence in Yelp reviews, because like all anonymous reviews, they have become targeted by people with an agenda, both for and against.
