Hire makes no sense

Why hire Steele?
Steele’s longest-serving tenure as a coordinator came at Clemson. His three Clemson teams ranked 12th in 2009, 19th in 2010 and 71st in 2011 in total defense.
These numbers aren't stellar. They might as well have just promoted Haley.

They got worse every season. Aren't they supposed to get better??? And they played in a weak ACC.

you would think that the way the board is melting that his defense was horrible every year
Posted on 1/14/15 at 8:03 am to foghat
his 2010 defense was damn near identical to Chavis' stat wise.

Great recruiter, great teacher, Miles thinks to think he is a better fit here than previous stops. Time will tell.

He's a "meh" hire.

recruiting is a huge plus.
he fits into our system
I hear he knows our players.
Throughout his history as a DC with one exception he has had good defenses none of them are great sure, but I don't think Smart could have a great defense at Clemson.
Give the guy time. He isn't a home run hire as many people were hoping for, but he isn't going to be responsible for the downfall of our defense.
Rumor has it that we are about to bring in BeBe
That would be one scary three headed recruiting monster.

Doesn't matter if his defense gets worse every year, probably won't be around that long. Miles is out if he keeps underachieving, and a new HC and coordinators come in.

SEC vs ACC???? I don't think they compare.

Peoples, especially on TigerDroppings, are stupid. They wanted Ellis Johnson in 2008, thought Chavis was washed up and that spread offenses had passed him by.
I pay very little attention to people on here and generally speaking, if my opinion falls in line with the majority; I start to get a little worried.

eh 12 to 19 is hardly a drop off
obviously the last season is alarming, but I have no idea what Clemson lost that year or anything
I know everyone freaks out about the WVU game, but shite, LSU gave up a ton of yards that year to WVU too, and the Auburn could have easily put up 70 on LSU this year

Where is it written he was 12th in 2009?
Clemson gave up 20.4 pts a game in 2009.
They were 20th on yards per game.

I've tried to make sense of the hire and I think this hire was due to the logjam of position coaches currently on staff.
I think the bigger candidates want to run the whole show and bring with them who they want. Rumor was Pendergrast wanted this.
So we all know Les doesn't like to fire people even when they struggle at doing their job, but how do you fire people that are doing good (Raymond) just to get one man?
I believe les knew he wasn't going to fire people so he had to get a DC that coached LBs in case the rest of his staff remained in tact due to buyouts and what not.
That right there will lower a candidate pool, but stuff like that wouldn't come out until a face to face interview.
So les had to make the hire so it would be the right fit for coaches by position. Plus he wanted a recruiter.
Whether I agree or disagree with les is not the issue. I'm just trying to come up with ways where it would make sense.

So 2 of 3 seasons he had a top 20 defense?

Why not just promote Haley then???

These aren't bad numbers...and he did it at Clemson.
We have way better talent for him to work with. We will be fine with Steele, everyone just needs to give him a chance.
Most people hating on him are just being sheeps to the moment because it is the popular chicken little thing to do.
