I guess I’ll go in the minority column saying Steele is a good hire. While I agree not a HR, he is a 2b in the gap. As noted by many he can recruit, and can do so at a high level in a very competitive SEC West corner of the country. This will no doubt help our program.

His hire also takes a ‘chip’ away from Bama. People can say what they want, but I believe Saban DOES NOT keep around dead weight, etc. This guy was beneficial to their program, now he will be beneficial to ours!

Lastly as a true DC, I’ll guess we’ll see. Numbers first two yrs at Clemson are very solid. Was the drop off due to loss of talent? We have seen that around here too, no doubt, due to underclassman leaving early. He will definitely have the talent pool, and with Haley and Raymond hopefully staying on, we can continue to be successful. I just can’t help but think his association with Kirby Smart & Saban, as a member of that Def coaching staff, will bring value to our program.

In the end I’m glad we did not go with some NFL DC type. They don’t know how to recruit! They have been out of that atmosphere dealing with a different type of player, and of course NO parents. Steele has been in the middle of these cycles for year and look at the success Bama has had on the recruiting trail over the last 3-4 yrs. Guys like Orgeron on not on staff somewhere for a reason…amazing how much that guy has bounced around.

Other than Shoop from PSU, who would have been a HR hire IMO, I think Steele was the only realistic candidate I heard over the last 2 weeks and he checks quite a few blocks for LSU to remain very competitive in recruiting, and return to the upper echelon of SEC teams competing for championships.
GT!

The main thing I hope we get from Steele is great linebacker play. I like what he did with players like CJ Mosely, Reggie Ragland, and Trey DePreist. The linebackers (besides Kwon) has been weak for us since Kevin Minter left. Beckwith stopped the bleeding for us this past season, but with good coaching, he can be an All-American next year.

I guess that you forget he was fired by Clemson and Saban demoted him rather quickly.

Aaah, you must be in politics. Take one phrase and say it represents the thread. I think the msg was pretty clear as a fan of the program.

Believe Kiffin was fired from USC too...seems to be doing OK in new environment. Again, not the HR hire, but I don't believe it will be the disastrous hire many are predicting.

Well, when you are referring to his skills as a defensive coordinator, you would think that would be the most important qualifications.

I was going to throw in the next quote but left it off:

An odd question mark to have for someone whose main skill is recruiting.

The guy has some ups: Character, experience, clearly knows linebackers. I would have to dig deeper to find some other ups. However pointing to how well he recruited at Alabama when a waterboy could recruit for that school isn't settling my nerves.

The world of coaching isn't like the corporate world when it comes to hiring and firing. Coaches are quite dependent on the rest of the staff when it comes to success. A coach has to have a decent name image behind his school to obtain decent recruits. Baylor wasn't that until the past few years.

Remember Chavis-lovers your boy CHOSE to leave LSU for an arch rival. Regardless the situation he CHOSE to leave. Now, we have a person in that position that WANTS to be here. He's here and ain't going nowhere. Until he may stumble I'm in with this hire. Screw John Chavis and the arse whooping his team is going to get in Death Valley next year. It'll be quite the homecoming for Chief.

No. A program that thinks of itself as a top program, when it needs a coordinator hires a frickING COORDINATOR!!!!

LSU IS a great program and a great program has a way of making coaches. Remember, Saban was 34-24 at Michigan State before LSU hired him. I don't know how good Steele is but I know that he's never had the talent pool that he's about to have.

As their HC. Nobody ever said he was a bad OC

Kiffin was a HC not a OC at USC. Saban recognizes that some people are just not good at certain positions. Steele is not good as a DC. Saban wasn't exactly pressing to have Steele take over his defense again after the first try where Steele failed.

Why are bringing up something that happen over a decade ago? The landscape of CFB has vastly changed.

Clemson's talent pool is on the same level as LSU.

I love how some of you act like recruiting is the hard part of this and scheming just kind of falls into place

Why do people think he was a longtime Bama LB coach? He was in a desk during CJ Mosely's Sr year. Last year was the only year he was Bama's LB coach.

I have no clue at all. He didn't stick around Alabama very long. But people want to play up this "Taking one from UA" narrative. When in reality, UA fans are completely fine with seeing K.Steele leave.
