I was cleaning out some closets and found a backpack I used on a trip to N.O. in '07. in one of the pouches I found several $5 and 2 $100 chips left over form a drunken night in Harrah's. Must have shoved them in the bag prior to passing out. I'm not a gambling/casino regular so I'm ignorant as to whether they still have value?

Doubtful, since they're likely using new chips. Don't know how often they reissue the chips, but it's certainly been since 2007.

If they change the chips, then yes.

After a year, they lose 50% of their value. That being said, I'll give you $150 for them

just go play some bj. they will break down the black chips at the table and then go cash out the red a few hands later.

worst case you are out a few hands, best case you win more

Pretty sure they do not have expiration dates, with that being said if you show up with chips that are 50 years old they probably won't cash you out, but a few/several years should be fine.

Thanks folks. So at best I get a % back at worst I've got some tangible proof I had a good time back in '07.

They change up the chips periodically, so that may be it. I've got a bunch of old chips from several Vegas casinos some of which aren't around anymore. For the ones that are still around I know I can't take in and trade them out.

Chips are like cash. If they don't take them at the cage, speak with the casino manager, should take care of them, a couple hundred bucks won't make them blink.

I'm absolutely sure that changing the chips does not render them worthless.

No they don't. There is a huge underground economy with poker chips. A lot of illegal things are paid for with poker chips. They don't go "bad".

Chips will eventually expire. Once the casinos have notified the GCB (Gaming Control Board) that the chips will be expired, there is an expiration date submitted. After that date, it is at the discretion of the casino to determine if they will honor the request to redeem it. The old chips are either destroyed or marked (ie hole drilled or mark punched into it) and sold at gift shops. Usually, if you're cool about it and the value of the chip(s) are relatively low.....$5 or less.....then they'll do it within 1 yr of the expiration date. I've never heard of a casino honoring chips older than 1 yr old.

This discusses Las Vegas and the statute is in the comments.

I went to Vegas for my 21st birthday and brought home a few chips as a souveneir. I went back a few years later and brought them. The casino had changed chips but they gave me my money.

If it's a lot of money they may be hesitant.
