Soooo i want to get a yak. Let me start off by saying i have no clue what im getting into. Have no clue on the ins and outs of yaks, so i would like some help. I will list what i plan to do with said yak
1st, this will be for the creeks, and occasional river trip. Will
never be any salt water.
2. I plan on using it mainly just for leisure, and yaking.
3. I would like the option to fish, but not seriously. Just to be able to catch red bellies and bass up and down creek as we enjoy the day
4. drink cold beer
so i need suggestions on what brand, length, and any other options i should look for. This will not be a "fishing yak" so i dont need 19 rod holders and such, but i would like to be able to take along a ultra light and some tackle, as well as cooler. Most creeks i would be in will be smaller. TIA

Ascend FS12T, official kayak of the OB. Would suit your needs perfectly. That's the Bass Pro Brand.

Sit on top is most comfortable. Either 10 or 12 foot

Exactly. Didn't know what size creeks you meant.

what are pros/cons of getting a 12 over a 10'? Whats difference?

Less storage in a 10', that 2' makes a big difference in what you can bring with you... ice chest and whatnot. Also, a 10' doesn't track as well. Meaning for each stroke you paddle, you don't go as straight as you would with a 12' boat. You have more spinning motion from side to side.
It would probably suit your needs. I just think that Sit on Tops are better than Sit In kayaks. I like the deck space and you're higher off the water, you can see better, less glare. Also has in hull storage, which is nice.

all good info

DSD pegged it down. 12' is plenty of boat without being too much. I have a 12 and a 14.5 footer. I pretty much only use the 14.5 footer. Trust me, a 14' will get in pretty much the same spots as a 10'. And the longer ones are more stable.

FS12T
PERCEPTION
I have a Perception, it works pretty good. Really light and easy to move. Really quick in the water. But the seat isn't as nice and the storage isn't as good as the Ascend, but it serves a purpose.

Depends on what your budget is. I also have a Perception. Handles great, light, affordable. I love that yak. The only downside is the seat. If you plan on being out on the water all day, it could get uncomfortable.

talked to buddy at work, he said he has a 10' because the 12 was too much to navigate small creeks and beaver ponds around his way fishn

I've been in some 12' wide channels with my fs12t and the only problem I had was getting to a dead end. But still wasn't that hard to turn around. I would think you would be fine in most creeks.

He would know better than we would what works out there, but I can't imagine that I would have any fun kayaking in an area where a 12' is too big.
They also make the Pescador in a 10' model, I believe.

If there's any place locally that'll let you "test drive" a few, I would highly recommend doing that.

This. I have a 14.5 and it's perfect. I've used it in everything from marshes to creeks. If the creek is too small for a 14.5, you'd probably be better off wading it anyways.

Get a Native Ultimate 12'. SUPER stable, very maneuverable and lots of storage. Extremely comfortable seat. I think it's the best option if you know you won't ever use it somewhere with waves as it doesn't have a way to drain through the hull.
