What took Oregon so long to become as competitive as they are now?

In the 70s and 80s they seemed to be pretty bad. Looking at their records, they were mainly at 3-4 wins, with maybe 1 or 2 winning seasons during that 20 year span. Then in the 90s, they had a few more winning seasons, but nothing special.

It's in Oregon, but still the West Coast, so decent geographic location. But the big thing is, Phil Knight could have been pouring money into this school back in the 70s and 80s (I'm guessing Nike was doing well at that time?).

Was Knight involved back then as much as he now? Did people just not want to go play there?

My guess is Knight being more involved in the program. More money for facility upgrades, coaching upgrades, etc.

Knight got involved after the first couple of successful seasons, basically at the same time Chip Kelly became HC. Knight couldn't start the program himself, but he could help them recruit by pouring in money once they got something going

He was involved well before that. They started building up their amazing facilities in the 90s under Bellotti.

They basically had a good combo of Washington falling apart at the same time that their facilities became the best in the country in the early 2000s. Then USC got hammered/Pete leaves and they had the Pac to themselves under an excellent coach.

State of Oregon isn't very good for recruiting. They had to start drawing kids in from out of state and Wasington was a better out of state draw. Plus USC sanctions helped make it more appealing for top recruits.

It took Rich Brooks a while to get them going.

Correct. Their Rose Bowl run in '94 really got the ball rolling for them.

Good point about Washington's collapse too. Oregon was able to take advantage of that and it probably is a big reason the Huskies have struggled to get back to prominence.

But this is what I'm saying. Why didn't he get way more involved a lot earlier on?

Oregon was a bottom ten team until the mid-late 80's. They've come a long way.
