I am 4 episodes into the first season.

I am not very familiar with David Lynch...but i am aware he is pretty eccentric.

Is the show intentionally cheesy or is that just the early 90s aspect of it?

The acting is horrible and the music is distractingly annoying.

The actor that plays leon makes Keanu seem like Meryl Streep.

The story is captivating enough though. .

I'm in the middle of marathoning this myself. Currently on S2E3. The cheesiness is just because it was made in the early 90s. I like the music, especially the opening music. The characters are all pretty weird, its just Lynch's thing.

I like the jazzy music but the soap opera music is just awful.

I feel like the music is trying to convey a message but i am just not picking it up.

Additionally...watching this puts into perspective how long ago 1991 was.

I think the message is that weird things can happen in seemingly normal small towns. It looks like they're going for a traditional murder mystery in a nice little all American town, but with with weird characters.

No it was different that your usual 90s show that and the mystery was it's big selling point.

Nobody called it cheesy though everyone just thought it was strange. Which it's Lynch so it kinda is.

I am saying that i think the type of music playing (jazz / soap opera) is conveying a message about the scene.

You have to enjoy the absurdity and weirdness. I do. If you don't, just stop. I know people who hate it. It's just a matter of taste.

The bad or over the top acting just adds to the strangeness. At first Twin Peaks had me thinking "What the frick am I watching?" then it just kind of set in. I like the strange atmosphere that Lynch creates with his work.

I wasn't able to get all the way through the second season though I may be due to try again. The first season was pretty phenomenal imo. The second drags pretty bad, but if I'm not mistaken Lynch had limited involvement with the second season.

You should get to know him. He's one of the GOAT directors.

Intentional. They were parodying soap operas. Plus, it adds to the weirdness, which is Lynch's MO.

I would also recommend watching Blue Velvet as soon as possible. It's a masterpiece.

Some have addressed this already...it has more to do with Lynch making a point and being campy while hammering cliches. It was wildly different than anything on so it's not a 90's thing.

That being said, Twin Peaks is a PERFECT example of a solid beginning idea that obviously had no fricking idea where it wanted to go long term. It was much more style than story. It would have made a far better English TV show that has three episodes per series (season) than a full on American TV season with multiple seasons. By season 2 it was clear Lynch had had no idea who killed Laura Palmer when he started and was just pulling shite out of his arse...which kind of takes away from the investment you put into it in the first season trying to figure out who did it.

I love remembering how much I liked that first season but because of the way the second went and then the movie I've never had any interest in going back and watching it again.

Sup, Rondo. For my money you still have the best head of hair on the board. At least you did, before you got so old. Great show in it's own way in that essentially David Lynch-way, but it was also really self-conscious. It tried to be overtly quirky and I'd guess 20 years+ later it's even more noticeable. But it's really good on a lot of levels, even if the story line sort of fizzled over time. My daughter wants to watch it now, which kind of freaks me out.

My favorite Lynch movie is the least "Lynch" movie-The Straight Story. A GREAT optimistic slice of the American Ethic. Check it out some time.
