We killed a few quail this weekend...

I'm lucky enough to know someone who's mom owns a big piece of property in one of the remaining "quail islands" in Texas. He is eat up with it and has even renegotiated with the cattle lease guy to begin rotating pastures. So 1/4 of the property is allowed a year to regenerate. This has really helped the situation over there.
So let me take you through the weekend...
We drove over Friday and managed to squeeze in a 2 man hunt right before dark. We found one covey of about 8 and knocked down 2 on the rise. We only found one, and it got dark before we could chase singles.
We woke up Saturday and got started about 9 am after a big breakfast. Gentlemen hunting is legit...
There were 4 of us, but someone would drive the mule while the other three hunted...
We found 2 coveys and killed 3.
Saturday afternoon 3 of us returned about 2:30 after lunch and had the best hunt of the weekend.
We found 6 coveys and killed 9. If you are wondering about the numbers, we would typically shoot the covey rise and chase singles for just a bird or two before moving on. That way the covey can regroup and you don't just pound on them.
We woke up Sunday and had a morning hunt before heading home. Right before we were ready to load it up we found one more covey and got 1 one the rise about 11:30. We called off the dogs and loaded it up. It was a great weekend. Here are a few more pics...
The guy on the right is who's mom owns the property. He handles all of the management and is partners on all of the dogs and equipment like the mule with the dog box.

The property is about 30 miles outside of Wichita Falls, TX.

Nice
When we go, we normally are just South of Paducah, Tx. It's a good ways out there.

It's 3417 acres, so about 900 acres at any given time is prime habitat with the rotating schedule. That said, we still found a covey in cow pastures Friday evening and Sunday morning.
As you can tell, we had to work for those single coveys in the cow pastures and when we hunted the good pasture Saturday is when we found the 8 coveys. Amazing what a little management can do for them.
Eta: Cow pasture all grazed down...

the boss has some land in TX that he deer and turkey hunts on. it has a lot of quail. they are not hunted because the cacti are so bad that we are afraid for the dogs.
do they have cacti on the land you hunted?

Yeah, you can see a little in the first picture, and it is hard on the dogs. You would see the dogs stop about every 20 minutes and start biting at their paws to pull out thorns. By Sunday morning every dog was tender footed like crazy. You could just tell by the way they ran. They shake back in about 3 or 4 days after a hard hunting weekend like that.

Nice weekend there, Clyde.
I bet it was a nice change of scenery from duck hunting this year.

I nearly threw in a smart arse "I hope y'all had fun fighting each other on public property" comment in the OP, but I thought better of stirring the pot.
But yes, it was very nice change of pace. It was a total gentlemen hunt. We started mid mornings with no rush or pressure to get out there by a certain time, and capped off Friday and Saturday evening in the field with cocktails by a fire as the sun went down.
