Why do soccer teams have FC at the end of their names?

I know we have a soccer board, but I feel like I'd be attacked over there for asking such a "newb" question.

It stands for "football club" right?

Should we adopt this in other sports?

New Orleans Football Team
Louisiana State University Football Team

Seems a bit redundant to me.

Because they don't really have team names, or mascots?

I think there's a Barcelona basketball team. Probably to decipher between teams.

I have no idea if this is right, but I would guess to establish it is the soccer team. I know organizations like Real Madrid have have teams in other sports.

Because team names are stupid and childish.

Grown men playing a game as "Panthers" or "Jaguars" or "Pelicans."

I answered what I thought it stood for. I didn't give the reason why, which is what I am looking for.

Most soccer teams are also just (city/town/neighborhood name). So they're the football club, from said city/town/neighborhood. Kind of like the police dept in the same city/town/neighborhood probably labels itself city/town/neighborhood PD.

Plus they have academy systems unlike teams in other sports

Right. Most of them also grew organically. So it wasn't like in the US where you have a bunch of fat suits sitting around a table saying, deciding nitpicky details about what colors, mascots, etc a franchise will have.

Ah, there it goes. Only took a few minutes.

All hail soccer, the best, most prestigious and awesome sport in the land!

uhhh what? I never said or implied any of that. Most soccer teams are around 100-150 years old. The teams existed long before teams names, mascots, team colors were even a consideration. That's in stark contrast to the franchise model in the US (which includes soccer BTW) where every detail is figured out before the actual team itself even exists.

Most of them literally started as clubs. Just guys that got together to kick the ball around and sometimes played other clubs.

Soccer in Europe (especially England) started as a bunch of club teams. Basically drinking buddies that played "football" on the weekends. Thus, they were called "football clubs."
