What's the best time of year to purchase a new vehicle?

Any tips? My last few vehicle purchases were all from the same dealership in MS but it's looking like my next will be in the Houston area. Looking to buy this year but not necessarily in a hurry so i'do like to put in some research first so again, any tips will be appreciated.

The last week in December. It's the slowest car sales period and all of the sales managers are scrambling to meet their annual sales goal.

There is a GREAT podcast called "This American Life" and one of the episodes gives some very interesting views on this topic.

Do you move them out so you don't have to pay inventory tax? Is that calculated on your inventory on the last day of the year?

Older units is what we are focused on. The brands we deal...alot of business owners buy vehicles in the last month for tax purposes. Very few for "Christmas Gifts" As the calendar switches years..obviously we'd like to get the previous years' models out the way. Some believe the good deals are to try and reach a certain "goal"...which can sometimes be true. But, if you're relying on one or two weeks to hit a goal...then there are other problems.

Actually, for us, the best time to buy would be January or early February. A strong start to the year can be a make or break point.
We are doing the same deals we did in December as of now.

Model year change which you have missed - for most it is August/September/October, although any 2014s that are left you can get great deals on - End of any month, hold out until the last day, sales guys and dealerships are hungry to make quota.

While this is true in some form, it is also myth. The last week of the year in December is actually one of the busiest weeks of the year. A lot of people realize and think end of month and end of year = great car sales. In sorts that is true, but if you go to any slow dealership at the end of a month, you're bound to get a good deal if you play the system right. Fact of the matter is, some dealers are so busy at end of year that you're probably more unlikely to get a good deal, because they have customers waiting and rolling in.
Don't go during tax time. Dealers move enough units during this time that most goals and quotas get hit before end of the month.
The best time to go is the fall. September and October are some of the best months. New units are coming and old ones are moving out. This with the combination of holiday season coming up, people typically start holding onto money this time of year.
Locally, go on a big game Saturday night. Get in there around 6pm before a big LSU game starts, F&I and Sales manager are going to want to get the frick out, and will probably be more inclined to bargain with you and give you what you want to make the sale and go watch the game.

I bought our car last May on Memorial Day. Got the best deal I saw all year on the one I wanted.

Particularly years like this year when we as tax folks sent a lot of people to car dealerships because of last minute extenders.
I went to test drive a car for myself the last week of December and felt no unusual pressure like they needed to hit a sales goal.

i was listening to a podcast of some auto insider and he said in most cases you will get the best deals at the end of a quarter, and the worst deals at the beginning of the quarter, especially in january. reason behind this was incentives from the manufacturer are usually increased towards the end of a quarter.

I know this has historically been a very lucrative time for dealerships. Does anyone in the business have a concern about the potential affects of Obamacare penalties taking a bite out of that fiscal period?
