It's very easy to use. I do not do much with it over than watch HBO Go, Netflix, Showtime, WatchESPN, and also use it for some YouTube or Vimeo videos. I do like the Air Display. I have a MacBook Air and can mirror it the Apple TV. Makes it easy to play music over the stereo, etc.

If you use iTunes to watch TV/Movies, or you have Macs/iPads/iPhones and see yourself benefitting from screen casting then an AppleTV may work for you. If the above doesn't apply then Roku/Fire/Chromecast are what to decide between.

Apple TV is so easy, my 4 year old daughter can run it.

Screencasting from apple, android, and windows based products is available for a handful of Amazon Firetv apps. I picked one up for the low price of free. There are several in the $1-5 range when they're not on promotion. This key feature for the AppleTV is starting to slip away from being unique. And it's never worked perfectly for me. The app on my FireTV stick is about as good. I'll look it up in the morning if anyone cares to know the specific one.

Now, if you've got a computer running iTunes as a media server,
An AppleTV is a pretty good choice. Most the ones I'm coming into contact with are starting to show their age- they lag, frequently fail to update, have difficulties with playback that don't seem to be related to internet connection strength. They're starting to slip off my "good in the right setting" recommendation to a "you should wait until they finally release the next generation of kill the product line altogether." They're not quite there yet, but they're moving in that direction.

I've got some in my house. Since it links well with my existing iPad and iPhones, it was an easy call. I'm not sure if it is better or worse than the other market products.

I like the AirPlay and mirroring function. I can project my iPad screen onto our big tv to discuss items with others. I use the YouTube, ESPN, and other apps a lot.
No issues or concerns. I'm happy with it.

AirDrop is also available with TVMC on the Fire TV and Fire Stick. Gotta dig around in the setting to enable it.

As for the mirroring function, my Droid Turbo mirrors perfectly fine on both AFTV & Roku 3 natively - no app required.

Forgot about this. Good catch. I find it slightly less reliable than the one I picked up from the Amazon App Store, so I don't use it very often.

ETA- but I very likely could tweak a setting or two or move to a more reliable wifi network (this is set up at a house that isn't mine) and get better results.
