I'm always looking to expand my musical horizons, particularly with rock and metal.

I've finally taken the time to listen to Queens of the Stone Age and I am impressed to say the least.

What are their best songs and albums to check out?

Also, what are some other hard rock/alternative rock bands from that time period that are worth a listen?

Songs for the Deaf

i know you like heavier music so start their.

Lullabies to Paralyze is sort of a concept album. Although not sure the concept... its less heavy that the previous mention.

I love the hell out of their latest Like Clockwork...

not a bad album buy them ever IMO

My favorite metal band from that time is Isis.

Has element all over the place but I do not think you will be disappointed.

See albums Panopticion and In the Absence of Truth

I've tried getting into Isis and some of the other atmospheric bands, but for some reason that spark of interest just isn't there.

I'll admit that there are a number of bands that I like which required multiple listens before I could connect with their sound, so there's always a chance that I'm just not "hearing" the right thing.

Queens is my favorite rock band of the last 15 years.

Rated R is such a great album. I like all of their releases though and they kill it live.

So much crap on here.

QOTSA are the best at what they do by a large margin. Check out Kyuss, which pretty much is a predecessor .

Chevelle did a solid cover (rip-off) of Be Quiet and Drive.

Them Crooked Vultures are great if you haven't heard. Josh Homme (QOTSA), John Paul Jones, and Dave Grohl.

I was a student dj for KLSU and my work-study boss was the faculty supervisor for the station.

I always valued his musical opinion despite it being a bit eclectic if not eccentric at times. He explicitly praised Them Crooked Vultures and I have always wanted to take the time to give them a quality listen.

Mastodon

I've stated this in the past on this forum, but that was still one of the most unimpressive live shows I have ever seen.

With that being said, I just purchased Crack the Skye and really liked it. That damn "Oblivion" is hard to get out of your head.

I've also ordered Leviathan and I hoping I will enjoy it as well.

Most stoner rock and stoner metal turns me off because of the vocals and the occasional lack of tempo in the music. However, I realize that the members of Mastodon are considered virtuosos throughout the rock and metal community.

Say what you want about their second and third releases, but that debut is one of the best rock albums I've heard post-2000. They also put on a hell of a live show.

Shinedown

They do some great things but it's their fanbase that seems to turn me off more than anything. If I never hear "Second Chance" again it will be too soon.

I've really tried to like Kyuss, but they're just too "sluggish" for me.

There might be five days out of the year that I will actively seek out stoner rock/metal or doom.

I would never have thought to put them on here if I hadn't heard them live at a free show. They were phenomenal performers. I just haven't really liked anything since their Sound of Madness album.

Pick out the crap and I'll tell you why I included them anyways. Actually, I'll do that for you:
Alter Bridge: "Blackbird", "Cry of Achilles"
Avenged Sevenfold: "So Far Away", "Bat Country"
Asking Alexandria: "Moving On"
Bullet for my Valentine: "Hearts Burst Into Fire"
Dragonforce: "Through the Fire and Flames"
Faith no More: "Epic"
Foo Fighters: "The Pretender", "This is a Call", "Best of You"
Gaslight Anthem: "45", "Great Expectations", "Handwritten"
Rise Against: "Prayer of the Refuge", "Help is on the Way", "This is Letting Go", "The Dirt Whispered"
Monster Truck: "Sweet Mountain Woman"
Of Mice & Men: "Feels Like Forever"
Chevelle: "Shameful Metaphors"

P.S. another band to check out is Crash Kings
