Les Miles' Use of Running Backs over 10 Years

In lieu of the dismay of Fournette only receiving 11 carries in bowl game, I decided to look at Miles' use of running backs during his tenure here.
The numbers tell an interesting story.
As you will see below, Les is far more likely to have NO RB carry the ball more than 15 carries in a game then he is to have ONE RB carry the ball more than 25 carries in a game.
However, when he has a back who has gone on to some level of success in the NFL he is more likely to ride him than when he doesn't. Joseph Addai carried the ball 20+ times in 6 games in 2005. Steven Ridley carried the ball 20+ times in 5 games in 2010. Jeremy Hill carried the ball 20+ times 4 times in 2013.
Next year you will see Fournette carry the ball 20+ times in 4-6 of the games. That is the historical pattern over 10 years. No back has carried the ball that many times in more than 6 games in Miles' entire tenure.
I do have to point out in the review of the stats, Les is not one of these coaches that will leave his guys in a cupcake game just so he can build his stats. Thus, by in large the numbers our RB's put up are against SEC caliber competition.
Les has coached 132 games at LSU and here is the breakdown of his use of Rb's:
Games of 30+ carries by one RB - 1 (Addai - 2005 vs. Florida) = .7% of games
Games of 25+ carries by one RB - 8 = 6% of games
Games of 20+ carries by one RB - 26 = 20% of games
Games of 15+ carries by one RB - 47 = 36% of games
Games when NO RB had more the 15+ carries - 50 =39% of games
The numbers tell an interesting story.

I actually enjoyed reading this.

nicely done.
I am sure Les tells his RB recruits the same thing.
If you are good, then we will ride you. You will also still have plenty of shelf life in the NFL. Jeremy Hill blowing it up in the NFL has got to have Fournette, Guice, etc smiling ear to ear

It tells you that he really does care about his players future

I like the idea of being able to finish off a game with fresh running backs but I also think Les somewhat stubbornly sticks to the philosophy when we might be better served sticking with the hot hand. When a guy is in a rhythm and running well, unless he's totally spent, why bench him just for the sake of getting 2 other guys some carries?

Not a LM fan but the guy knows how to handle a stable of backs.
Que the "hot hand" crowd.

While I tend to agree with point, I also believe if he stuck with one back all the time then we wouldn't have the stable of RBs that we have for quite some time now and hurt recruiting. Kids want to know that they are going to play and sooner is better.

Now this is an informative post.

LF only getting 11 carries in the bowl game were a function of 3 long one play TD drives than an intentional lack of carries.
But I agree with the general sentiment of this post. And if you look at all the RBs that lettered during Les' 10 seasons, only one (Shyrone Carey) did not spend at lease one year on an NFL roster. That's impressive.

He probably should have received more carries, but:
1.) He had a kickoff return for a TD that took away offensive plays/carries
2.) He had a long TD run that took away offensive plays/carries
3.) He had to leave the game at 1 point with a sprained ankle
4.) ND controlled the clock.

What if he did it the other way around? Start with Williams and others THEN finish with Leonard? Use the "other guy" to soften them up then they won't know what to do come the fourth quarter. BAM!

LF had games where he rushed the ball 15, 18, 19, 21, 23, and 27 times.
I'd say it's pretty much a guarantee that he'll hit 20 many times next year.
LF averaged just under 15/game this season.

I think Fournette's 11 carry performance in the bowl game had more to do with 2 seniors needing carries to impress scouts.

IDK about that. The two seniors combined for less rushes than Fournette (Magee - 7 and Hilliard - 3)

Fournette came off injured.

This is a main reason we get so many talented backs. Fresh legs when they get to the league.

I think that's because they couldn't get a drive going in the 4th qtr. I think all of hilliards carries came in the 4th.

Exactly. Not being on the field as much as usual is why all of them received a small number of attempts. Turn those one play scores into scoring drives of several plays, and LF probably gets 20+ carries in the game.
