I've been looking at rice cookers on Amazon but haven't pulled the trigger yet. I'm not sure it's worth it but it would make rice cooking easier. Thoughts/comments?

Also, is there a model that anyone could recommend? They seem to range in price from $20 to $150 and I'm not sure if more money = better product. I think a $30 model would suit my needs.

Waste. I only use mine like 3 or 4 times a year when I am having a big group for gumbo or something.

Usually i only need a cup or 2 of rice and just do it in a saucepan.

I use mine all the time. I have several sizes. I don't keep either on the counter. I only use the large one for serving a good bit of people or both of the large ones sometimes, but it's in the cabinet and well worth it when I need it.

I have a small one I picked up at Walgreens for about 10 bucks maybe 7 years ago or so. Great for cooking rice for just family. Frees up a burner and stovetop space if I need that for other pots or baking sheets etc... Its a set it and forget it type deal and the rice stays warm a good while if you don't lift the top. My small one doesn't have the warming cycle, though the large ones do.

Rice is easy to make, but I prefer the rice cooker so it's one less item to check when I have multiple things cooking. You can steam in them also.

I think the biggest pro to me is that it frees up a burner. If I'm cooking some fish and sautéing some squash, that pretty much maxes out my shitty 4-burner electric range. And the added benefit of not having to remember to take the rice off the heat is a plus.

Someone said recently that a rice cooker is un-american. I don't think this but I thought that comment was funny.

Learn to cook rice in a pot. It's not that hard.

I'm considering getting one since it's pretty much idiot proof. I can leave it and forget it, and have cooked rice when I come back to it.

Waste

1 cup rice to 1.5 cup of water.

Bring to rolling boil. Stir once. Turn fire off. Let sit for 25 minutes covered. Perfect every time.

I know how to cook rice in a pot but why not do it in a rice cooker when it's pretty much foolproof every time? Don't see how it's a bad thing when it makes cooking easier.

Outside of stirring the pot and turning the for off, it's pretty foolproof on the stove too

Mine only sits on the counter when cooking with it, and yes, it's worth it. There's some sort of charm about adding just rice and water, pressing a button, resulting in perfect rice every time.

It's been so long since I purchased mine that I couldn't tell you where I got it, but Asian marts or even Walmart are a good place to start. Go for the cheapest model.

Remember to rinse your rice three times.

Got a pressure (steam) rice cooker from Williams Sonoma about 10 yrs ago. Haven't cooked rice on a stove pot since. It's a National brand (has been bought out). Much better rice and it was about $100. I use less water than rice. Bought it because stove top rice is too mushy for me. Store it in a cabinet.

yES, VERY EASY. bUT i DON'T WANT TO SIT AND WAIT FOR WATER TO BOIL, GET DISTRATCED by a shiny toy and forget about the rice. RICE cooker is so easy and makes better rice.
