CES 2015 Thread
Posted by ILikeLSUToo on 1/6/15 at 12:52 pm10
Can't believe this isn't a thread yet. We should be all over this.
Notable Sources for Coverage
CNET: CNET.com/ces
(not my favorite site in the world, but they do a good job with CES coverage and the page is well organized)
See "News" at the top of the page for categories of CES coverage, including phones, TVs, tablets, computers, gaming, gadgets, wearables, smart home, car tech, etc.
PCMag Coverage: pcmag.com/ces
Engadget: engadget.com/ces2015
Digital Trends: digitaltrends.com/ces
The Verge: theverge.com/ces-2015
IGN: ign.com/events/ces
Targeted Coverage for Smartphones
GSM Arena
Phone Arena
------------------------------------
What's the most interesting shite you've seen?
I want a chocolate 3D printer
Sony Smartglass Attach is like Google Glass you snap on your own frames
Would not wear.
More 4K laptops, like the 13.3" Dell XPS 13 -- 0.6" thick, 2.6-2.8lbs
Also some 15" Inspirons are getting 4K panels and broadwell CPUs.
Speaking of Intel Broadwell, the dual-cores are rolling out.
'Schlage Sense' Smart Lock Allows Siri Voice Commands to Unlock Doors
And then there's the PC gaming stuff which I will reserve for the proper board.

What is Broadwell bringing to the table?

I'm liking all of the multimedia receivers for cars that support Android Auto. I will definitely be in the market to get one of those installed.

Lithography shrink, from 22nm to 14nm (Ivy and Haswell were both 22nm) with the same power efficiency improvements that arrived in the original Haswells. So with the die shrink there's a reduction in TDP again and probably the typical 10% IPC improvement. The most notable improvement seems to be integrated graphics. A hand full of 28W mobile i3s, i7s, and i5s are being released with a refresh of Iris Pro graphics, which seems to tie in with the influx of 4K laptops with broadwell. On the desktop side, there's nothing to be excited about.

Should I be considering Broadwell processors for my workstations?
Sounds like a no.

Nice, AndroidAuto looks amazing. Will probably grab whichever is the cheapest of those.

I do love the work they have done with their integrated graphics the last few years. It doesn't help my PC but it's still good for the mainstream.

CNET has nicely organized its CES coverage into various categories: Cell Phones
Here's a sampling:
LG G Flex 2
Lenovo Vibe X2 Pro and Lenovo P90
That round thing sticking out of the top is apparently a selfie flash extension, sold separately
Kodak's phone debut is super-simple and runs Android KitKat
It's designed for baby boomers/senior citizens

I want a cheaper version of a Note 4. With all the multitasking and stuff. I am a cheap bastard.

Correct, Broadwell is mainstream CPUs, quad core and below. However, depending on how long you wait to build the workstations, Broadwell-E (for the extreme/enthusiast platform) will be the successor to Haswell-E, arriving sometime in Q3/Q4 of this year. Not to say it's worth waiting for at all, but if you do end up holding off that long for other reasons, Broadwell-E will probably be the chip to get.

Has Michael Bay stormed off the stage yet?

Good deal.
The thing that's gonna be the deciding factor is when our clients decide to adopt 2015. The newer versions seem to always be more demanding on the processor and most of our clients wait a year before adoption and 2016 will be coming out in April. Like I've said previously my goal is longevity of the chipset.
