Occupational existential crisis. ER nurses and docs too. Questions?

I've been an ER nurse for 12 years or so. For the last 2 years I have found a pure desk job. Thought I would love it. Thought it would give me more time with my son. Neither is the case. Any of you here have firsthand experience in free standing ER's? Are there any negatives? As I said I am a nurse not a doc, but in this type of environment a docs opinion helps too. Just a doc and a nurse and techs.

I'm feeling the burn of burnout, and don't know what to do. ER is my wheelhouse. But I would look to anything really. Oil and gas have any RN applications?

Probably not the best time to be exploring that avenue.

Gas down to $2. I wish it were a commodity like silver or gold. I would buy a few hundred barrels and sit on them til summer travel season.

ER nurses hate ICU.

ICU nurses hate ER.

The skills are compatible but does not matter.

10 years as an ER nurse (hated ICU). Left to work in home health to have better hours for my young children. I expected to hate it because I thought of it as low tech and thought that my adrenaline junkie persona would not be happy. I loved it! There is much autonomy and all of your assessment skills and critical thinking are put to the test - you can truly make a difference in patients' and families' lives. Now a CWOCN and have never been more satisfied with my career. Don't be afraid to find your niche. Good luck.

Do any of the big chemical plants have nurses on staff? Seems like they would in case of accidents and to do wellness stuff with employees. Since those places have a primarily male workforce, seems to me a male nurse would be an asset.
My wife used to be a nurse in a step down unit. One of her co workers got a job as a nurse for Blue Cross, another got a school nurse job. Those look like they would be jobs that gave you a lot of family time.

School nurses make very little money though(the national average is around 40k from a quick google search). More like a job someone takes if their spouse makes really good money and they just want something easy to keep their nursing license current.

Same for school therapists, but it is a somewhat decent second income for a family............but the main reward is the generous state-sponsored retirement. At least that is how it is here in LA.

To Alum Wannabe, I hope you find your bliss ASAP, and/or figure out who moved your cheese.

What would you like to know about free-standing EDs? Great gig all around...less BS politics and most of the ambulances by-pass you for tertiary care centers. Also, there's a copay collected in triage so most of the trolls stay away. My wife is an ER RN and does quite well working 7 on 7 off nights.

My wife was an ER nurse for the same duration, then went and tried Disease Nurse Management - a desk job. She was farking miserable, and as a result our house was miserable.

It takes special people to deal with the blood and guts each day. Once it's in you, it is very difficult to get away from.

I'm not sure how the job market is where you live, but in Louisville, she got about 6 offers in the first week before going back to her original ER position. Good luck.

This was what I had heard and understand. Just wondering about negatives.

My desk job has me currently off for weekends and holidays, which is huge, but if your Friday is so fricking miserable it carries into early Saturday and late Sunday the dread of 5 more days begins, what the frick is the point?

Yesterday was fricking terrible. And it's JUST PAPERWORK!!!

I'm a RN and I do occupational health and safety in the oilfield now. Much better hours and less stress than working in the hospital. It's not for everybody but I'm not going back to the hospital unless it's part time af children's.
