Options are

A. Ruger American rifle in all weather stock/barrel in 308 caliber
Can get one for about 450 bucks

B. Browning x-bolt with wood stock in either 270 or 308

C. Browning safari bar in wood stock in either 270 or 308

The Brownings will cost between 250-600 more bucks. I looked at one of the ruger American rifles in a local shop the other day and they look about like a cheaper version of the Hawkeye. Are Brownings worth extra cost? Would I be happy with ruger American rifle?

Americans look and feel cheap to me.

Go with a Tikka T3, it costs more than the American, less than the Browning, and is better than both.

Why is the 270 an option for B and C, but not A?

Kind of odd.

This is a good feeling rifle. I am thinking of owning one myself

Sweet arse Gun

The Ruger Hawkeyes are very good rifles, I own three of them.

I dont know, I just have a hard time purchasing a gun made in Japan. I wont criticize those who purchase Browning guns but I just cannot drop that kind of money for a gun not made in the US or Europe. Honestly a Steyr costs the same and will destroy a Browning.

I'll never understand this board's obsession with this rifle.

Sub-moa, great trigger, light weight, cheap, more accurate than any browning ever dreamed of being

Depends on what you want it for. Looks will cost you extra money. If you want something you can throw behind the seat of the truck and you just want it to kill deer and hogs, go with the Ruger American. Son in law bought one and I went with him to sight it in. Shot great! Inch to inch and a qtr groups at 100 yds. That was with a $150 dollar Nikon 3 x 9 and cheap ammo. I was impressed. It did feel cheap but the deer won't mind. He's a low maintenance kind of guy. I'm sure the next time I see the gun it will look like hell, but it will kill deer. I have a buddy who practically lives on a ranch in South Texas. He has shot more deer than most people will ever see in a lifetime. He's also a hog killing machine. Probably shoots in excess of a hundred hogs a year. He does all of that with an old single shot Savage Model 24C. That's the old break barrel 30-30 on top and 20 ga on the bottom gun. They don't even make them anymore. He's had to replace the firing pin twice, but it still keeps dropping those deer like it doesn't even know it's a cheap POS. So if you want a show piece, spend some money. If you just want to kill animals, save that money for ammo and making sausage. Just my two cents.

I like the Browning in 308. I've never owned or shot a Tikka. When we were looking for my wife a rifle we looked at the tikka. She wanted a 308 and it was a long action. Kinda defeated the purpose of a SA caliber. Why is that? We got her an A bolt in 308.

It's cheaper to just make everything use the same action.

You get a really good barrel and trigger from Tikka. They cut a lot
of corners elsewhere.

I'm in this same dilemma. I've been set on an x-bolt stainless stalker for a while now in 308. The board has me leaning towards a T3 now and devoting more $ towards glass. I'm torn
