Any chance these DC candidates are contacting Chavis, getting his view on things and then that influences them not to seriously consider the position?

If I'm a defensive coordinator considering the job, I'm doing everything I can to find out the real reason why Chavis left.

Why would they not want this defense, with it being as young and talented as it is

It hasn't really been that hard to figure out. There's no super secret reason.

The agent industry in college football is a pretty small circle. I bet it's known

I disagree. I don't think we have full story.

IN some ways it is a tight knit group, so yes I think there are avenues that are available within that group for such information.

If that was the real reason then the position would already be filled.

Chavis is a loyal guy. He has been at two places since 1989. Money is not the complete answer.

This coaching search is more about candidates interviewing Mike's than it is Mike's interviewing candidates.

I would think most DCs prefer coaching a team whose offense helps them out, rather than screwing them over

Maybe the other coaches got tired of him not recruiting and were vocal about it

Most defensive coordinators aren't out on the road recruiting...

The contracts that were offered tell the story. Alleva offered 2 years with a guarantee, and either 3 or 4 without. If the guarantee alone was the issue, one wouldn't have been offered. So, why bother putting on out there, but not going all the way to meet Chavis' demands?

There are three possible answers:
1. Alleva knows when Miles is going to step away, and won't offer a buyout he knows he will have to pay.
2. Alleva is giving Miles a vote of no confidence, and again, doesn't want to offer a buyout he will have to pay.
3. Alleva played chicken and lost badly.

I think when you strip everything else away, this is what's left. I personally think the endgame is Miles' retirement, and the athletic dept is trying to keep that from becoming an issue with recruiting. But you can't say the no confidence vote isn't a viable answer. In fact, that may answer the question of why Alleva has suddenly become so damn stingy. He could be banking toward paying Miles' sizable buyout in a year or two, and didn't want a guaranteed guy sitting on the staff, just adding to an already sizeable buyout, on top of a new coach's salary.

If we end up promoting Brick Haley to DC, the no confidence thing makes me VERY concerned for the next year or two.

I really don't think playing chicken is the answer here, but it is possible.

He wasn't very active in the offseason doing allowed duties. Many DCs recruit VERY hard during these periods. Muschamp comes to mind.

Maybe your former DC didn't either but the good one most certainly do.
