I've been on the Pendergast bandwagon from day one but the Shoop talk is getting real, what's his fortay?

What defense does he run?
How is he against the spread?
Where has he coached?
Can he recruit in the South?
Does he have a rep for sending guys to the NFL?

From nola.com:

quote:

Considered one of the bright, young defensive minds in the nation, no contact has been made with Shoop but the vetting process has begun, sources said.

Shoop's first Nittany Lion unit finished first in the Big 10 in scoring defense (18.6 points per game) and total defense (278.7 ypg). At Vanderbilt, his defense finished nationally ranked at 18th, 19th and 23rd from 2011-13. He is valued for his knowledge of the SEC teams and recruiting.

An alumnus of Yale where he played wide receiver, Shoop also worked as a defensive coordinator at William and Mary (2007-10), Villanova (1997) and Yale (1994-96). Shoop has other coaching stops at Northeastern, Army, Boston College, Columbia and UMass.

Bob Shoop brings 25 years of collegiate coaching experience back to his home state as the Nittany Lions' defensive coordinator and safeties coach. A native of Oakmont, Pa., Shoop was the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Vanderbilt the past three years, directing the Commodores to Top 25 finishes in total defense every season: 18th (2011), 19th (2012) and 23rd (2013). Shoop's defense forced 30 turnovers last season, tied for 10th nationally, including 24 over the final eight games, boosting VU to a 6-2 finish. The Commodores won their last five games in 2013, allowing 15.6 ppg during the streak. His 2012 unit held opponents to just 18.7 points per game, the lowest by a VU squad since 1997, and ranked in the Top 15 nationally in pass and scoring defense. Shoop helped mentor cornerback Casey Heyward, who grabbed seven interceptions in 2011 and is tied for the Vanderbilt career record with 15 interceptions, earn All-America and All-SEC honors as a senior. He was selected by the Green Bay Packers in the second round of the 2012 NFL Draft and led all rookies with six interceptions. Shoop also has coached at William & Mary (2007-10), Massachusetts (2006), Columbia (2003-05), Boston College (1999-2002), Army (1998), Villanova (1997), Yale (1989, 1994-96), Northeastern (1991-93) and Virginia (1990).

Outside of his time at Vandy under franklin, shoop has been in the northeast... just something to think about, considering he's there now and is from Pennsylvania.

Shoop is a Plan A kinda hire IMO.

His most impressive stats are what he was able to do at Vandy. That's REAL coaching; taking smart kids & turning them into top 20 athletes.
