this is a spinoff thread from a PT thread, but I just wanted to see some of the MSB types opinions on it

From a positional standpoint:

PG - today
SG - 80s/90s
SF - 80s/90s
PF - tie
C - 80s/90s

Best player vs best player:

MJ > Lebron

I'm of the opinion that top to bottom, the quality of player back then was higher than the quality of player now. Big men were considerably better. The SG position was considerably better. The only thing that today can boast of being better in are point guards, because we are currently in the most talent-rich point guard era of maybe all time.

So what do you say MSB brahs? Today or the 80s/90s?

Today for sure, and 20 years from now it will be more talented. Sports evolve. It is a little bit down for big men now, but there's such a small pool of 7 footers in the world.

no

you have an argument if you restrict this to the very top shelf talent, but top to bottom today smokes the past

Yup. MAYBE the elite group of players are better in certain time periods, but the talent pool as a whole is almost always better in the present day.

This is why stupid people think CBB or CFB are "down" some years.

I think today's SGs and SFs blow the 80s/90s out of the water.

80/90s probably wins the centers though.

Bird, MJ, Pippen, Worthy, Dominique, Reggie Miller, Drexler, etc. Outside of center the wing players were the most stacked position in that era.

SF today in the NBA is easily the most shallow position outside of maybe center

Big men and the very upper echelon, the 80s and 90s hold their weight, but top to bottom the NBA teams today would frick over the teams 20-30 years ago, no question.

Blah blah, how would they be officiated, blah blah, it wouldn't matter

but top to bottom the NBA teams today
96 Bulls vs 2012 Heat (who is the best team of past 5-10 years? they'd probably get my vote)

Who wins that game? I wouldn't bet against Jordan, even a 32 y/o Jordan

The stars in the early 90's were better and would dominate today, but the league as a whole is better regarding depth.

Play a round robin with teams from 96 and teams from 2014 and 14' teams win at a pretty high clip

I love AD but Hakeem would straight murder him in the paint

AD couldn't keep Howard from bullying him around inside last night, and Dwight Howard fricking sucks

Jordan vs Curry would be fun to watch. Prime Jordan could shut Curry down. Curry would not be able to stop prime Jordan.

The guards today are sick... The league is so deep it's hard to name the top 10 and all are much more athletic than the 80s and 90s

I agree the rim protectors of that day was a great era, but depth alone today's teams win hands down
