What's the best route to go?
Go to the DMV and take the on-site skills test or complete a motercycle safety course where they will wave the skills test?

I have heard the on site test is a joke. They basically make you ride around the parking lot.
You would probably benefit from a skills program though. Getting a license won't keep you from killing yourself.

Do the Louisiana State Police course, it was great. I have been riding my whole life and still found good advice in it.

The on site test is a joke.
Now getting all pre reqs to take the test is a pain.
Get insurance. Take bike to be inspected. Fail for not having a license. Must take dmv test and pass within 10 days.
You have to do all that within 30 days of getting insurance so you can show proof of your endorsement to the insurance provider.
On the flip side sacrifice one weekend and 125$ to the LSP and you get to learn on one of their bikes, get an insurance discount, and take one 20 minute computerized test on road laws.

Ok thanks
I'm going to look into the LSP course.
I could probably use it. I rode dirtbikes growing up but after a bad wreck, shelfed it. Haven't really drove much except for jumping on friends bikes and taking a ride to the store or something over the years.

Take an msg course and pass it. Then go to the dmv and get your endorsement. This way you can bypass the dmv testing entirely

The DMV is getting away from road tests for vehicles and going to 3rd party testers. Not sure what'll happen with cycles.

Go here ( LINK )and look up a time and place to take the course. If you are in and around Baton Rouge, the Zachary course will be the best one to go to. The classes fill up fast, so hurry. Pay for the bike rental as 95% of the class will. You will take the written test there and you will pass b/c you go over all the answers beforehand. Once the course is completed you will only have to take your endorsement to the DMV. It is a very fun class IMO and you will learn a lot.

On site. All you have to do is ride in a figure 8 once then around the parking lot.

I took an msf course years ago when I started riding. It is worth the time and effort for a new rider.
I've never had nor been asked for a motorcycle inspection sticker in LA. Inspection stickers on bikes are basically unenforced at least in BR.
Over the last 20 years I've also never had an insurer ask to provide proof of endorsement.
The only time I've ever been asked for the endorsement was for a Yamaha test ride.

Way back when there was a separate motorcycle written test also.

State tests are a joke, easy to pass. Look into doing something like a MSF course just for the insurance savings though.
MSF courses are a joke as well, taught a few years. You really can't beat a good total control class or even a track day to learn how to ride, not just visit bars.

The Mississippi test is a joke. I would strongly recommend taking a riding course. Some dealers will provide that when you buy a bike from them. Try and get that added in.
A good safety course will give you some skills that may save your life

Funny thing is when you ride your motorcycle to the DMV to take the test. Completely retarded. I had a woman tell me to "go reverse"
