Just watched "Into the Woods"
Posted by mizzoukills on 1/1/15 at 11:06 pm25
My little girl wanted to see it. I like a good musical every now-and-then.
Absolutely terrible movie. Awful! It's like they directed the movie on one set (the woods) and in one specific location in the woods. They skipped over the more fantastical imagery in favor of very mediocre songs. It was like watching 2 hours of all characters standing still in the same location singing the entire time.
You'd think with a story about little red riding hood, a wolf, a witch, Cinderella, Jack and the magic bean stock, giants, and Rapunzel that the movie would at least be full of cool SFX and imagery.
Nope.
The movie doesn't show the giant's castle in the sky, Cinderella's transformation at midnight, a real wolf, or fricking giants!
Yeah, you read it right...no wolf. Depp simply plays his weird self albeit furry wolf hands and a tail. He's Johnny Depp in the face, but he has wolf hands and a tail.
WTF?
And don't get me started on the story with its major plot holes.
Make no mistake: This movie is one of the worst of 2014/15
ETA: The theatre was packed. When the movie ended, the entire theatre groaned as if 100 sleeping people were suddenly nudged in the ribs by their significant others. Several people said it was a waste of money and time. They were right.

My gf dragged me to it last night. Had no idea it was a musical. From start to finish it was just awful.

People have told me:
- You just don't like musicals.
- You're not familiar with the play.
- You were expecting a traditional fairy tale.
No, no, no... I like some musicals, some I don't like. Same with Sondheim's plays.
I shouldn't have to be familiar with the play to enjoy the movie.
I don't care if it's not a traditional fairy tale. I was hoping that it wasn't a traditional Disney fairy tale movie.
It's just a bad, non-entertaining movie. Spotty performances and not a single memorable song. And it just gets worse and worse as it goes along. It felt like a four hour film.
My worst movie of the year, and I saw Tusk.

This isn't really the type of musical that appeals to the masses.

True, but it generally helps to know what to expect.

This is laughable. Every major actor was terrific in this film and could actually sing unlike Les Mis last year.
And if you don't think "Agony" is a memorable song, you have no sense of humor or take yourself far too seriously.

Into The Woods is arguably Sondheim's best work and is overflowing with memorable songs and scenes. I won't bother giving examples because I feel like I'd need to list pretty much the whole musical not to shortchange anything.

It's an excellent play/musical but it never needed to be made into a movie.

Have you even seen the play? The movie is a pretty damn good adaption, minus some minor issues. All of the things you hated about the movie would make you hate the play as well. The movie sanitized the story a bit, no doubt because it's a Disney film. The play is actually not for children and has a much darker tone. I'm not a huge Sondheim fan but most people I know who liked the play also liked the movie. The actors all sang much better than I anticipated, which was a pleasant surprise.

I did think "Agony" was funny and memorable but the constant songs and singy-dialogue drove me insane. Also couldn't stand how they would sing different songs/words over each other.
Chris Pine was the only actor or character I liked. Repunzle was useless. Could of saved 15 mins of screen time cutting her scenes except for when the wife needed her hair.

I think this is the exact pitch that casting used to convince the studio.

You are such a troll that I forget you are a father. Do you troll your daughter on the reg?

More like "Into the Wood". Amirite?

Gotta love people who don't like musicals but love Talladega Nights.

"Agony" was sort of funny. That's the only time in the entire movie that I laughed.
However, I agree that there wasn't one truly great song in that entire musical.
To be fair, I haven't seen the play and my wife and I go to at least one broadway play each year. Perhaps if I had seen the play first I would've appreciated the movie more.
However, the fault lies with Disney. They made this movie seem like a wonderfully awesome childrens fantasy movie...which it isn't.
People who aren't familiar with the play just don't get the movie. They're expecting to see something like Tangled and instead they get a creepy pedophile's guide to seducing children.
People actually left the theatre midway thru. This movie wasn't marketed right.

If you have to see the play to appreciate the movie, then the movie is terrible.
By definition.
