For those who don't think underclassmen should leave
Posted by Buda on 1/1/15 at 11:03 am23
People keep saying they cannot understand why a junior or 3Y Sophomore would leave early. Let me put it to you like this:
Suppose you are at LSU majoring in engineering. And you are such a good engineer that, in the middle of your junior year, the best engineering company in the world, or NASA, or some other unbelievable engineering organization says to you: "we want to hire you now - you don't need to finish your degree. We're gonna pay you a million dollars per year for a 3-year contract and give you half a million signing bonus. Sure you may be a better engineer if you stay another year and graduate, but we are ready to pay you now. And oh, by the way, you're going to be working on your dream job."
Do you say: "No thanks. I'm gonna stay in school." ???
Of course not.
For you to suggest that a kid should stay at LSU when he can go do what he dreams of and make a lot of $ doing it is just crazy. You really can't blame them for leaving.

People who don't see why kids would leave early are clowns.
The only problem with your analogy is that you can be an engineer for a long long time. Can only play football for a few years

What if that engineering for also tells you that you only have about a 50/50 shot of still being employed with us after 2 years?
Nobody questions the kids leaving early who will be drafted in the top two rounds. But LSU has guys that leave early to get picked in round 5 or later.

FIFY
Guaranteed yes you go, but going into the draft is no guarantee. I see your point but it's not that absolute. Gamble either way.

Exactly. I'd love to see the data on the average lifespan of an undergrad who goes pro vs. a senior.

More like you're an average engineer and an engineering company tells you they'll pay you a million dollars for two years and you're unemployed.

how many 'engineers' make $500,000 after their junior year in college? Wise choice to leave and get the $$$$

You have to be drafted in the top 3 rounds to get that kind of money and in the 1st or real early 2nd to get elite money. If you are rated at a 4th rounder or later, you should probably come back. Kwon right now is rated around 3-4 which would put him on the edge. I think agents inflate most players to encourage them to come out so they can drive their numbers up. Just my opinion.

And if you go late or FA you get $20k upfront and $1500 per week thru training camp as long as you are on the team. You bounce around for 3 years which is average then you're done. Now you have a shiny car no money and no degree. That a what happens to most of the players
Or they give up literally millions cause they leave too early and undermine their draft ranking.
Saban always advised them that unless you are going to go in the top half of the 1st round, never leave early. You're costing yourself huge money.

Dumb argument. If you are an engineer like that you will always be in demand. Also, if you are a football player and a first rounder you should go, otherwise, your argument is very shallow. I was in that situation and stayed in school and I am glad I did.

engineering is not their dream job.. NFL football is

It's been suggested that many of our guys were struggling in school and needed to move on
More to it than "money"
No way Freak should have left last year, but some how, he made a roster

Actually this is not a good analogy. It should be you are majoring in engineering, and really struggling to get C's and B's. You don't really like school, but love marketing and a marketing company comes to you and says skip the rest of your schooling, and come work for us. We'll pay you at least 400k/year and you are guaranteed a year, but you have the potential to make a lot more. Research would tell you the average life of a marketer with this company is roughly 2-3 years and many that made it big with them are now broke.
Question is: Do you take the job or stay in school?
Realize that these guys aren't majoring in football. It's a extracurricular activity and reality is that most of these players dislike the classroom. I understand why they want to get away, but when you get a draft grade of round 6-UFA, you should stay in school and invest in your future after football which for most players happens within 3 years of leaving college. I think the NCAA and NFL do a piss poor job of driving this point home with today's CFB athlete.

An engineer can go back to engineering school if he flames out at that job, finish his preparation for the workplace, and bounce back.
The football player doesn't have that option. Once he has left college, if he doesn't succeed, he has very limited options to continue development to get another shot. Canada? Practice squad? The Arena league over the Summer? It isn't quite the slam dunk argument that you make it out to be. Some guys SHOULD go, but others are making a mistake and potentially hurting their chances at success in the league if they do.
Honestly, I would put every one of our Juniors but Vadal Alexander in the stay in school category. None of the rest are high round, sure fire successes.
But if they do go, like Kwon, I wish them nothing but the best! Geaux Tigers!
