This has been my only true concern with Chavis leaving.

If Chavis is out, so is LSU for Phillips

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The rumors are heating up that LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis is heading to Texas A&M. LSU defensive line coach Brick Haley could be going with him. If that indeed happens, it will have a direct impact on LSU's recruiting class in the form of four-star defensive lineman Kyle Phillips out of Nashville (Tenn.) Hillsboro.

Phillips is set to make his college announcement at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and he's down to Tennessee, Ole Miss and LSU in that decision. The Crystal Ball has been trending heavily of late for the LSU Tigers but if Chavis departs, expect LSU predictions to dwindle significantly.

it could be offset with the right hire though

a new DC could bring in other recruits that LSU had no shot at before

If Chavis doesn't leave, there is a high likelihood that Phillips will still go elsewhere.

if he went elsewhere, perhaps, but losing one of the top few DCs in the country across the border to a conf rival who will compete directly with our recruiting is a long term problem that im more concerned with.

It could happen, but I would think that the timing of this will be a net negative for LSU recruiting.

Is what it is.

Chavis, unlike all the other assistants, chose not to sign his new deal.

His choice. LSU did not ask him to leave. He did not warn LSU that he will likely take the Faggie job. He mailed in his bowl game. LSU can't control that and if a recruit wants to play for Chavis (or Brick) and not the NFL factory of LSU, so be it.

But if he comes to LSU, he'll be able to showcase his talents for 3.75 quarters of football EVERY game. WHo wouldn't want that

I disagree, players chose programs because a Coach at some position has influenced them. They feel they can gain from being around that coach.

I don't blame him. But if he really liked LSU for LSU he would postpone his commitment until we hire someone

I agree with this, but sadly its the norm. You think kids are going to Bama just because its Bama?

Have you been to Tuscaloosa?

You're dumb. You obviously come for the coaches.

You want coaches you like and who you can trust and who will train you to be the best you can be and send you to the nfl.

Obviously you want to have a relationship with the coaches. But that doesn't change the fact that where you go to school matters.

Would you go to the University of Northern Alaska School of Sub-Zero Survival Skills just because Saban was there?

There has to be a balance.
