Unlike the teams of the Kellen Moore era, which were always ranked in the preseason polls, including top-five preseason rankings in 2010 and 2011, this year's Broncos team started out the season unranked. We know that Marshall wouldn't have sniffed the playoffs, even if it had run the table, but what about an undefeated Boise State with a win over Ole Miss?

Would have happened way too early and a win over an Ole Miss team with 4 losses isn't getting them in.
Colorado State, Connecticut, Louisiana-Lafayette, Air Force, Nevada, Fresno State (x2), BYU, New Mexico, San Diego State, Wyoming, Utah State

That's their schedule. Lots of bowl teams on it, and those bowl teams are 3-5 with wins over UTEP, Western Michigan, and Nevada.

I think it would be close. They definitely would be top ten, since even with two losses, they passed an undefeated Marshall in the rankings before they lost. My guess is that they would be in the 5-7 range.

In 2010, Mountain West champion TCU finished the regular season ranked #3 behind an undefeated Oregon and Auburn. If the current playoff system had been in place then, I wonder if the Selection Committee would have dropped them out of the playoffs on their final poll like they did this year, to make room for two of three one-loss teams (Stanford, Wisconsin and Ohio State) that were ranked #4, #5 and #6.

that Mountain West still had Utah and BYU, and didn't have some of the trash from the WAC
