Looking for true Japanese cuisine in Dallas

One of the joys when I travel to larger cities is that there's a good chance to find decent Japanese cuisine. It's been a few years since I've been to Dallas, so I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions. Something similar to Horinoya in New Orleans compared to other sushi joints. Bonus points if Japanese is spoken. I mostly stick with sashimi and would love to find a place with true Japanese dishes. I'll be staying in the Downtown area.
I researched Nobu, but the urban spoon reviewers don't have too much good to say about it.
On a side note, any gastropub suggestions would be appreciated.

hi there, please see below for some recs
not sure what your budget in so i threw in a few that are moderate to expensive
also some great gastropubs around downtown
sushi
Tei An- very nice, pricey but quality for sure
Yutaka- small, intimate cool setting
Tei Tei- Tokyo style small upscale setting
Kenichi- probably the trendiest one, next to AA center downtown and cool atmosphere. not cheap
i would say those will fit your needs for traditional true to Japanese fare. i meet some coworkers for happy hour around uptown and its more modern trendy sushi but still good stuff.
Steel Sushi
Sushi Zushi
Sushi Axiom
one tip- there is one place downtown you might see called Zenna and it always gets great reviews. if you want TRUE japenese, this isnt what you're looking for. its great but its because its the cheapest happy hour in town. its not quality, just great drink and food specials. just an FYI if you see it and google it and wonder why its rated so high. its seriously the best sushi deals in town. $1 beers, $2 sake, $3 rolls for happy hour but again its entry level grade.
Pubs
Meddlesome Moth- design district, cool atmosphere, trendy happy hour crowd. great beer and food
The social house- over 110 beers, great setting, downtown
Luck- new trendy place ive been really wanting to try. hearing good things. part of new trinity grove district thats 5 minutes from downtown. do beer pairings every night of week and have all Texas beers on draft- over 50 i believe. food looks great too
scotch and sausage- new trendy place in uptown, huge beer and scotch selection with cool patio and good menu
craft and growler- awesome place, only thing is its in an older sketchier part of town by the cotton bowl but still 5 minutes from downtown. they have TONs of beer and the best part is you can take home growlers with you. good atmosphere
good luck, plenty of good options. the beer scene in DFW is exploding. i think there are 12 breweries now in the area and like i said above, one of the places just does local beers on draft and there are over 40. good times indeed
plenty of good sushi options too. i travel a lot for work and we have some great sushi
good luck!

Teppo on lower Greenville is my favorite sushi spot. It is a small, intimate place and the chefs and staff are japanese. We usually sit at the bar. You do have to wait for a table or bar spot since its small but you can walk to one of the multiple bars with in 100 yards and they will text you when your spot is ready. If you like craft beer The Bottle Shop is due north about 100 yards on the same side of the street as Teppo. We usually wait there.
Tei-Tei is really good too but a bigger, louder place populated by a lot of uptown douchebags. We still go there but I prefer Teppo.
I'll second Meddlesome moth for pub.
Others: Just across the street from Teppo on Greenville is The Blind Butcher...they make there sausage in house.
The Common Table is really good with a very well selected beer menu. Parking can be a pain though.
Cold Beer Company is a new place that has good food and good beer but skews a bit younger (20s) it seems.
Goodfriend Beer Garden is probably my favorite place atmosphere wise. The food is good although we were there a couple of weeks ago and everyone seemed to be disappointed. There is a New England Style Seafood place next door run by a well known Dallas chef that is BYOB....although you can't take a beer in from Goodfriend.....damn texas laws.

BTW- have you been to cbd provisions? I want to try it and looks pretty sweet. gotta try that smoked hogs head carnitas

Haven't been.....just got back from Austin so I will be hating on Dallas restaurants for a couple of weeks.

quote:Ding ding ding!!! This sounds what I'm looking for. I only know of a couple of Japanese chefs in LA and they're both in NO, which is why I look forward to getting to bigger cities. Baton Rouge for instance has a Japanese population of zero.
the chefs and staff are japanese
Thanks for the detailed suggestions guys. I will be taking your advice and doing some research. Keep em coming.

I've had omakase at Tei An which was very good.
Tei An
Their sister restaurant, Tei Tei Robata is nice if you like robataya style cooking. Sit at the robataya bar. Their sushi is really good there too.
Tei Tei Robata
It's been years since I have been there but there was a sushi bar in Richardson called Sushi Sake that had a large Japanese clientele and had a lot of hard to find, obscure fish/seafood on the daily special chalboard menu for nigiri or sashimi. It is owned by Takashi Soda.
Sushi Sake in Richardson
Of the three, Tei An is the closest to the dining at Kabuto in Las Vegas.
Cheers!

I assume you went when it was a tiny place in a strip mall. They have moved to a bigger space now but I haven't been up there in a while either. But it was good when I used to go 10 years ago.

Yes, the last time I was there, it was a tiny little place in a strip mall but I remember getting baby crabs, kohada, kazunoko, and seeing a whole lot of fish on the daily special menu that you don't see in most sushi places.
Looking over the Teppo menu has some interesting items like the sake steamed snapper head, fresh water and salt water eel, and two kinds of mackerel. Thanks for the suggestion. I would like to try it out next time I am in town.
Cheers!

Sushi sake is in a nice building now and is very good
A tip though is they open at 5 and don't take reservations and the parking lot is full at 4:30. Place gets packed!!

I thought Tei An was great. The bone marrow was awesome, in addition to the other 10 dishes that we tried!
