The plan to save the USA
Posted by udtiger on 12/29/14 at 9:46 pm37
1) Increase gasoline tax to $.25 per gallon with ALL revenue going to roads/bridges
2) Eliminate federal income taxes (including constitutional repeal) and replace with 20% federal sales tax.
3) 3% federal sales tax to fund SS.
4) 2% medical insurance tax - single payer for anyone that wants it (but people who wish to pay fee for service can do so)
5) all federal laws/regs to have 3 year sunset
6) decriminalization of marijuana
7) 10 percent across the board cut for all departments (cuts, not reductions in spending)
8) all laws to apply to Congress and the Executive
9) Repeal 17th Amendment

Repeal the 17th Amendment??? That is lunacy.
where do we sign? shite... might as well do something different.
I would like to rid taxes from overtime pay while we are at it should e not get to repeal federal income tax. I'll give the government 40 hours a week... anything more should be lagniappe.

They should have just made Congress into a unicameral body when they passed it.
They aren't fooling those of us who pay attention.

Isn't military spending around half of the budget?
20% sales tax discourages transactions and thus would stifle the economy.

you get a 20% increase in your pay check, so you're neutral
besides, what about all that preaching that Americans consume too much and don't save enough?

I'd like us to stop giving billions in aid to foreign countries.
And yes, I include Israel in that list as well as the rest of the Middle East, Africa, Asia, etc.

I would rather flatten the income tax and eliminate all deductions. Plus everyone under 65 would have to pay income taxes. 5%, 10% and 20% tax brackets

The military and prisons should cut 20 %
I like the rest

Better idea.
1. Ban liberals from the USA.
Country fixed in 2 years.

awesome idea. Then my total sales tax rate would be nearly 30%. That will surely stimulate business.

Genius. Clearly that's what the founder's intended, what with Senators having 6 year terms.

Dude that's genius! Why bother to look at the budget and think when we can just be stupid?

I like the spirit of the idea, but we really don't need any new taxes. We need to stop hemorrhaging money on absurd entitlement schemes (includes those aimed at poor citizens and those aimed at business interests), corruption, and waste.

Umm....no.

Obama's 2014 budget proposed military spending of 627 billion out of a total budget of 3.78 trillion, equaling 16.58% of the budget.
BTW, non-SS/Medicare entitlement spending (Medicaid, CHIP, Food Stamps [105 billion, alone], Housing "assistance", unemployment insurance, etc.) totaled 799 billion in Obama's 2014 budget = 21.1% of the total budget.

Yes, people would have a little shock at the cash register. However, when they see no deductions coming out of their paycheck (at least federal), that would more than offset it. Plus, with a sales tax you can control how much tax you pay. The only way to do that with an income tax is to not earn income, or earn less.
re: The plan to save the USAPosted by Asgard Device on 12/30/14 at 8:10 am to udtiger
You're absolutely right. I didn't realize we counted SS and Medicare as taxes now. I always hear about the 47% who don't pay taxes. I hear about the 1% paying for x% of taxes and it never includes SS or Medicare because even low wage workers pay those taxes.
Having said that, there's way too many bleeding hearts running the budgets of various governments up. Could definitely be cut.

People that throw out that number and NOT add the qualifier they are speaking of income taxes are being deceptive. Typically, they just say "taxes" and then correct it later.
That said, the purpose of the EITC is to offset those payroll taxes for low income workers. So, when the dust settles, most of them actually do end up not paying ANY taxes.

Can't tell whether you are serious or not. However, you could easily cut 5% off the top of every department's or agency's budget right now. 10% is also doable, but it would sting. Still, it should (and needs to be) done. Everyone else has to tighten their belts and look for savings when income gets tight...government should do so also (and should be the first to do it).

Is this on every dollar spent, or would there be exceptions? Most people spend most of what they make, especially the lower 50 percent of the population, so this would be a MASSIVE tax increase for them.
quote:
3% federal sales tax to fund SS.
Is this total? Or would employers still kick in 6.2%?
quote:
2% medical insurance tax
Currently workers pay 1.45% for medicare and companies match it... I can not imagine how 2 percent will be enough to provide health care for all unless you have massive reductions in service.
quote:
10 percent across the board cut for all departments
Across the board cuts are lazy and unproductive. We need to eliminate entire federal programs and agencies, while perhaps increasing spending in others.

The military (I'm retired military and currently work for the DoD) needs to be completely overhauled and the 5 branches need to be eliminated. Create 1 military and everything falls under it: you eliminate a TON of redundancies (policies, equipment, etc), you can reduce troop levels to something sustainable without the extreme increases and decreases, with 1 military force, you'll eliminate a lot of senior officers.
