Give some super obscure movie recommendations...
Posted by THRILLHO on 12/29/14 at 7:32 pm00
I'm not talking about something like "In Bruges" that may have been ignored by the general public. I mean movies that you enjoyed that even TD's knowledgeable crowd has missed:
1) Mary and Max: I think Rex and me are the only ones that have seen this one. Lost out to "Up" for best animated picture in 09, but this one is just about as good.
2) Happy Accidents : giving the genre of the film could actually be a bit of a spoiler, so I would recommend going into this one a blind as possible. Marissa Tomei and Vincent D'Onofrio have great chemistry in a funny and engaging film.
3) Cheap Thrills: I've pimped this (along with Mary/Max) for a while and have only gotten one bite. They loved it. It's kind of a modern day, fricked up version of "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf".
4) Heavy with Pruitt Taylor Vince (that fat guy with shifty eyes) and Liv Tyler. Gets better on multiple viewings, but you'll enjoy th first.
5) You Can Count on Me A touching film with Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo. Don't want to give away more than that.
6) Owning Mahoney Was only going to do five, but this one crossed my mind just as I was about to submit. Phillip Seymour Hoffman is dead, so any fans of his should absolutely check out this hidden gem.

Just remembered The Music of Chance with James Spader and Mandy Patinkin. It's the weakest of my list but still a good movie and absolutely worth a watch. This and Happy Accidents are the only films on the list that I really can't think of any films to compare it to.

Submarine is really good. Currently on Netflix.

Seent it and loved it. Ayoade's "Double" is an overall failed ode to "Brazil", but still good enough to be worth a watch.

Don't trust you based on posting history, but will check out at least one of them.
Thought of one more for Michael Shannon fans: The Missing Person
It's a solid ode to the film noir era. Very awkward dialogue in some parts, most likely on purpose. It's not loaded with big time plot twists, yet the film manages to totally change directions at least twice. Had some "symbology" that I didn't pick up on until reading IMDB.

The Young Poisoner's Handbook Saw this on Sundance Channel about 15 years ago. I guess you would call it a black comedy.
Wonder Boys Michael Douglas, Tobey Maguire, RDJ, Frances McDormand, great cast overall plus the director of LA Confidential. Good all around movie.
In the Company of Men Aaron Eckhart's character is one of the most sociopathetic, borderline evil, characters I've ever seen in a movie and he is awesome at it. Very dark comedy for sure.

Loved this one too. Haven't seen the other two, but had "In the Company of Men" on my watchlist because I really liked the director's other film The Shape of Things. That's another movie that I should have put in the OP. Someone posted about it about a month ago and two other people responded with praise.

Say baw, people find new hidden gems on the reg. I only discovered "The Shape of Things" and "The Music of Chance" within the past month.

if you can find a thread on any of those films that weren't started by me or Rex, I'll blow you.
What truck stop do you want to meet at?
