What would an NFL pre-playoffs postseason trade period be like?

It would be nuts to have all the playoff teams scrambling to fill holes on their squads with non-playoff team player mercenaries.

Just this year Arizona would go hard after Cutler or Orton and that would completely change the playoff landscape. Seahawks/Panthers could sign a WR, etc.

I'm bored at work if you couldn't tell

In my hypothetical LaLaLand they are permanent trades.

However, I enjoy the "loan" idea. Like the Seahawks could rent OBJ for the playoffs for a 1st round draft pick or even a promise to give them a certain player after the season. So the Giants basically earn interest on their loan in the form of a player or draft pick.

fascinating concept, the loan idea could be dangerous.

Imagine Arizona "renting" Drew Brees.

Seattle with OBJ

Detroit adding J.J. Watt

It's kinda cool, but I don't like it. It wouldn't feel like a real "team" won the super bowl, more like a team with some other dudes thrown in. Like if Brees went to another team and won the SB, did that team really win it or is it more on brees? If he plays 2 games and wins the SB it'd be weird that he'd get a ring (for 2 games worth of work) yet his actual team the saints don't.

Idk, just seems like it'd cheapen things.

Issue with the loan idea would be it happening too much. Every damn team that missed the playoffs would do it.

Maybe each non-playoff team is allowed to "loan" 1 player a year for the playoffs. They would have to consider injury possibility, etc. and the player would have to agree to this at that time of the loan or during their initial contract negotiations with original team.

Side topic:

Would you, as a Saints fan, agree to loan Brees to the Cardinals for the playoffs for a 1st round draft pick next year?

I damn sure would want that

Definitely see this as well. I think the 1-player per team would limit it though. Each playoff team can grab 1 player and each non-playoff team can loan only 1 player.

I think it wouldn't happen as much as people think because major impact players wouldn't be cheap and not many teams would sacrifice a 1st-round draft pick for potentially 1 playoff game (if they lose).

And what if brees got loaned out and tore his ACL and had to miss half of next season...would it have been worth it to the saints simply to get a draft pick out of it?

Well thats what makes this idea interesting.

And I think its worth the risk because Brees has been very good at avoiding injuries in his career outside of the shoulder. Also, he is getting older and we NEED talent. If this was 2008/2009 I'd say no.

Another variable in this is what if the loaned player doesn't try hard because they don't give a shite about the team he's loaned to? Would have to put in performance based incentives.

the rented player's compensation would be tricky. the renting team would have to, as you said, incentivize their performance to maximize their return. and would players love the idea b/c they make some extra bank and get to play in big games they otherwise would be watching from home, or would they never want to risk injury for a temporary team..?
