Unlike most other main sports venues, the Silverdome was not demolished after the Lions moved out after the 2001 season. The cable supported fabric roof failed last year and it's now open to the elements.

Here's a link to some recent pictures.

Man thats crazy, i would have thought that they tore that place down by now. Memories right there. Why dont they do anything with places like this?

If I had to guess the place costs more to fix than its worth.

As far as tearing it down, that's a pretty expensive undertaking also (Easily 10's of millions). I have to guess the commercial real estate market in that area is not exactly booming.

Houston can't figure anything out either. There are some proposals for different uses but the astrodome is in mothballs too. Difference is in Texas, we build real roofs.

When I was a kid at Saints games I always thought it would have been cool to see what the Superdome looked like without its roof. I guess it would have looked pretty much like that.

You also don't have to deal with the snow that Detroit has to deal with.

What always amazes me is when buildings are abandoned, it’s like they just leave everything where it’s at and roll out. Filing cabinets filled with paper, drink bottles, ketchup, chairs, etc… People just go home for the day and never come back.

I would think so, but the cost to safely and properly demolish probably outweighs the salvage value.
