Our oldest is on her final days. Still alert but can't hold food down. Vet gave us steroids and antibiotics as a last resort. She is resting well and still seems semi happy but I think its time.
What say you ot? 12 year old 50 lb. Wonderful mutt

Apparently she ingested a part of the Christmas tree and is recovering very nicely she is back to her old self and playing again! !!!!

Sadly, if she cannot eat, it is that time. 12 years is a good lifespan for a dog that size.

Just don't let it suffer whatever you do. You know deep down if it's time but get a second opinion from the vet.

Agree. If you are not certain, get a second opinion. Perhaps, a different perspective or analysis of the situation may lead to a different way to proceed in assisting the dog to eat.

I had my dog put to sleep at age 15. He was almost blind, incontinent, and stumbled a lot but still enjoyed wandering around outside in the sun. When it got to where he was too weak to eat or walk, I had to make a tough choice. I hated seeing him like that. He had a really long life for what he'd been through.

Most vets aren't going to tell u it's time to put your dog down. You should have the best understanding of your dogs quality of life. If the dog is suffering then it is time but only you can answer that question. Give the dog the best final days you can imagine and then when it's time you make the call.

Putting a dog to sleep is one of those things you hate to do, but you have to do.

Give the dog a huge dose of love and attention, more than you ever have, and do the right thing.

You said your dog won't eat, so I won't suggest the big final meal.

Vet looked her over yesterday and had me send the wife and kids out. Told me it is nothing but age but we could try the steroids and antibiotics after she gave her a shot of zofran. Vet wanted me to choose. I chose one more shot but she is getting worse. I trust this vet.

In her way, the vet is telling you that it is time.

I had a Belgian Malinois that had cancer. I loved that dog, and I let that cloud my judgment and I let him go a few days too long before I made the decision to put him down.

To this day, it upsets me that I waited too long. I didn't want that dog to suffer, and I suspect he did.

Don't make my mistake.

There are many on here who would not pay to have that done.
