I received a letter from my auto carrier, Hanover, stating that my agent no longer represents them so they will not be renewing my policy. Am I better off finding a new agent or new auto insurance. My home and auto are with different companies already. I live in the BR area if anyone wants my business

You're probably missing out on the single biggest discount you can get on auto insurance and that's by bundling it with your homeowner's. I've always dealt directly with the insurance company, not through an agent, and prefer it that way.

What he/she said above. Call whoever writes your homeowners and ask what you'll save by adding auto.

Do you like or even know your agent? I would think if your agent is still in the insurance business, you would know that he/she no longer represents that company.

Find a good independent insurance agent. Dealing directly with an insurance company (Allstate, State Farm, etc.) is like dealing directly with only one car manufacturer for the rest of your life.

True, but when it comes to claims, it's better to have an agent within that organization. An independent agent cannot assist when it comes to claims.

And any agent out there that does not strongly recommend bundling home and auto should not be an agent to begin with.

Mine has assisted me with the 2 claims(one home, one auto) I have had, so this probably depends on the independent agent in question. Mine is a family member and I know he personally knows most, if not all, of the claims adjusters in his area for the insurance companies he sells for.

Huh?

That's what courts and lawyers are for, most of us are smart enough to know our rights.

Whose interests will an Allstate agent work harder for, an insured or the people who actually pay him/her?

An Independent Agent can (and do) work for their customers (the yous and mes) not the underwriting company.

You are quite naive as to the world of insurance.

Yeah, having worked for Allstate in claims, I can tell you the Allstate agents I occasionally talked to were oblivious to the Allstate claims process. Most didn't even know what subrogation was nor how it worked.

My State Farm agent has been great anytime I've needed anything, can't put a price on that

One of my closest personal friends is a very successful State Farm agent. Great guy, he's made a ton of money off of his clients. I am not one of them and will never be.

He knows that I know about his gig. He has admitted the conflict of interest that the general populace doesn't seem to get. He says (off-the-record)that he hopes it will never end and that he would handle his personal insurance through an independent insurance agent if he were not affiliated with the firm.

I'm happy you have had a good experience. I have had an experience that couldn't have been better as I've saved money over State Farm or Allstate priced coverages and had zero issues as to claims.
