Watched it last night with the wife and it might be the most boring movie I've ever seen outside Meet Joe Black. We gave it a try after reading nothing but positive reviews but good Lord that movie is slow. Are we just supposed to call it a good movie because it took 12 years to make? Anyone else seen it?

I thought it was a terrific character study made even more intriguing by covering a real 12 years.

That's literally it's only redeeming quality in my eyes.

You missed the entire point of the movie. The point is that life flies by and all you have are these little moments (baseball game with Dad, first kiss, graduation etc) where time slows down for a bit. Having 12 years of time pass in 3 hours actually gives you the impression that time is flying by. Not to mention Patricia Arquette/Ethan Hawke were great. It's a brilliant film.

Just finished this film and came here to start a thread about it. Searched, and found this thread.

Hooray for originality. I loved this film wish it never ended. Very refreshing, I'll recommend it to anyone who brings up film in conversation for the immediate future.

On a side note, on the topic of multi decade productions, isn't QT supposed to make a fourth episode of Kill Bill where Vivica Fox's daughter avenges her mother's (Vivica's) death?

i wanted to love the movie, but i just didn't. its amazing what they pulled off to make the movie, but thats by far it's most redeeming quality. nobody would give a shite about the movie if filming lasted a year using different actors to play the main character at different stages in his life.

The concept was cool but the kids ramblings about life were stupid.

They raised a great kid. He ended up a loser.

he ended up an 18 year old college student, fighting through his first heartbreak, first time away from home, and well. being 18.

this was a near perfect movie. sorry you forgot your childhood.

It was a good movie. Sorry that it didn't have any explosions to keep you interested.

i think the generation gap can account for the first quote. he started out a normal kid and turned into an emo/hipster or whatever. older people might think that meant he turned into a loser or a homo, but i think for todays younger generation thats about par for the course. also its possible that some people weren't able to connect with the kid as much as others because not everyone grew up moving from city to city to escape alcoholic abusive stepfathers.

It's a long movie, but I really enjoyed it. It was kind of sad to see the kids grow up so fast, but very interesting. I liked the concept and whole premise.

I thought it was a very well done film. Not the greatest ever, but very solid. I glad I watched it. The fact that they were able to pull something like this off is worthy of some sort of award.

It was easy to relate to a lot of what Mason experienced. I grew up in roughly the same time frame, high school mid 2000s, so it was amazing to watch him grow up.

I thought it was more cool seeing Ethan Hawke "grow up" in his father role than anything else in this movie. Maybe that's because he became the father I still want my own father to become. Art is subjective, and this one made me think about a lot of things. I felt good coming out of the theatre, for sure.

It was an above average film for me, nothing more

People are saying its a top 10 movie of all time for them. That's just laughable

I generally enjoyed it, but I got aggravated with Linklater's infantile political commentary that was occasionally interspersed. The whole McCain sign-stealing thing was comedy for idiots and completely unnecessary and the whole bit about why we went into Iraq (with the second husband/boyfriend) was shallow pandering. Left a really bad taste in my mouth.

Just watched this tonight with the wife. Thought it was very well done and, just as one said before, it is about the glimpses into one's life. Wasn't exciting, no huge amount of drama either. Just real life.

Seeing him upset about not getting his father's car was about how I felt when I didn't get anything when I was 16 yet was hoping my parent's had the money to buy me something. I had to work crap jobs to buy something. In most movies, you'll see Dad surprise him with the car, but not here. You'd see Mom finally find love, be happy for him to leave to start a new life at school, or get herself ahead financially, but not here.

That was the point . . . and it was moving.

If you like movies/film for brilliance and ingenuity, it's great.

If you like entertainment, it blows.
