In recent months, the pope has argued for a radical new financial and economic system to avoid human inequality and ecological devastation. In October he told a meeting of Latin American and Asian landless peasants and other social movements: “An economic system centred on the god of money needs to plunder nature to sustain the frenetic rhythm of consumption that is inherent to it.

a bold statement

did little bit of research this morning. His encyclical will be on creation, so it will likely focus on God's creation. Which will include care for the environment.

What I expect to happen is people will read this encyclical and jump on a phrase or two take it way out of context and misrepresent the Pope.

The Pope may give some new perspectives on the Churches view of the environment but I don't expect any major changes. Even though likely the media will say that he is changing a lot.

Wow. A major world figure who's anti-abortion with conservative views on many things...

and preaches care for the environment along with other "liberal" themes.

I'm not converting to Catholicism anytime soon but I've agreed with pretty much everything Francis has said or done.

Well, unless the pope has created an entirely new economic model, he has to pick between this consumption culture and a decline in poverty worldwide, or condemn to poverty the poor he wants to help in order to get real climate change through.

As of yet, there is not a middle ground between decreased productivity and real climate reforms imposed on an economy.

Hmmm.

the "economic system centered on the god of money" fueled by "the frenetic rhythm of consumption" has lifted more people out of poverty in the past 15 years than the Catholic church has managed in its entire history.

To whom does he attribute greed?

1. People who pay their own way
or
2. People who feel entitled to the assets of #1

I'll bet you a dollar that she had a huge opposition to capitalism.

Why is it so many popular Catholics have a good chance of being opposed to capitalism?

"greed" is a very interesting topic. i've been thinking about trying to make a "one thread to rule them all" thread about greed, touching on economics, politics, philosophy, etc. it may be too much for one singular discussion (that may devolve into solely a religious discussion, which, on here, would defeat the purpose)

one hard part is that "greed" is a multi-layered concept. one layer is what you said. another is rationality and irrationality (irrational greed is often how it's presented, especially in movies on the subject)

This pope makes me want to leave the Catholic Church more and more. He is the worst pope in a long long time. Just stick to teaching the Gospel, not trying to influence governments with terrible, failed ideas like socialism and climate change.

Greed is one of the most innovative forces for good on the marketplace.
